- 83,000 CHILDREN TO COMPETE FOR CHANCE TO PLAY IN CROKE PARK AT VHI CÚL DAY OUT

The 2010 Vhi GAA Cúl Camps were officially launched in Croke Park by Uachtarán Criostóir Ó Cuana and Jimmy Tolan, Chief Executive, Vhi Healthcare.

Also on hand to mark the launch of the fifth annual Vhi GAA Cúl Camps were Anthony Daly current Dublin Hurling Manager and former captain of Clare senior inter-county hurling team, and Kieran McGeeney , Kildare County Football  Manager and former captain of Armagh senior inter-county football team . These GAA legends will serve as ambassadors throughout the summer, visiting camps and will also train the lucky children that win a place at the Vhi Cúl Day Out in September.

Now in its fifth year, the Vhi GAA Cúl Camps is a nationally co-ordinated programme which aims to encourage primary school children between the ages of 7 and 13, not only to learn and develop sporting skills irrespective of their skill level or ability but also to develop a keen sense of fair-play and personal achievement by participating in Gaelic Games, in a fun, non-competitive environment. The individual camps are managed by experienced coaches who have devised a specific programme to ensure the participating children not only learn skills but also to place an emphasis on fun and team-building activity.

Introduced last year and considered a huge success by all involved, the Vhi Cúl Day Out will take place for the second time in September 2010. It is a unique opportunity for approximately 300 lucky children to win a competition and enjoy the experience of a lifetime, training with their GAA heroes and playing a game in Croke Park in front of friends and family, where they will experience the buzz and excitement of GAA’s favourite stadium. 

Jimmy Tolan, Chief Executive, Vhi Healthcare commented; “The Vhi GAA Cúl Camps have gone from strength to strength and continue to grow each year. Vhi Healthcare’s involvement in this initiative demonstrates its commitment to the promotion of healthy living at community level ensuring that children live healthy and active lives.

“We were thrilled with the success of the Vhi Cúl Day Out which was a high point of last year’s event. The children involved were mesmerised by the experience which enabled them to train with their heroes and play a game in the world-famous stadium.

“We will continue to work with the GAA to ensure the Vhi GAA Cúl Camps maintain their excellent standards and are challenging and fun for all involved.”

Speaking at the launch, GAA President, Criostóir Ó Cuana, said, “The VHI GAA Cúl Camp initiative is an excellent activity where young people can develop an interest in the GAA, local clubs and sport in general. The key to successful GAA is participation and it’s wonderful to see such enthusiasm from the children and coaches involved. Role models are an important part of the Camps and the ambassadors do a great job encouraging and supporting the children throughout the summer.

 “We at the GAA are hugely committed to the continued development  of the Vhi GAA Cúl Camps and we will continue to encourage children to get involved in the fun over the summer months.”

The 2010 Vhi GAA Cúl Camps are expected to be extremely popular with huge demand already coming through and parents are advised to book early to ensure they get a place at the camp of their choice.
