Our under 14 footballers played their third game, in the Gerry’s Prepared Veg Division 4 league campaign, when they played Killeevan at Pairc Naomh Mhuire on Saturday 18th May.
It was yet another day for the umbrella with field conditions wet and very slippery but I think all players have become used to the weather conditions by now because despite the terrible weather conditions it was a very entertaining game to watch. With both side lines packed with supporters the game started at a lightning pace and our lads had an excellent first quarter and were six points up leading 2-2 to 0-4. The second quarter was end to end stuff with both teams displaying massive amounts of determination and wonderful skills and we maintained our advantage leading 3-6 to 1-7 at the midway stage.
Killeevan upped the ante at the beginning of the third quarter and hit us with three goals in as many minutes to take the lead. However, there was plenty of time to recover and our lads showed great character and battled back with some fine scores and after a thrilling fifteen minutes we upheld a three point cushion leading 7-7 to 5-10 going into the final quarter. The lack of fresh legs proved vital in the last quarter and Killeevan’s strength and physical power proved a big factor in the game because they tagged on an impressive 3-3, to stamp their authority on the match, while we could only manage a single goal to leave the final score Rockcorry 8-7 Killeevan 8-13.
I have to say, this was a very enjoyable game and all players have to be commended for their efforts in difficult conditions. Sadly, the result did not go in our favour but if they continue to show that type of passion and commitment the results will come. Keep up the good work boys.
