Our under 14 footballers commenced their Gerry’s Prepared Veg Division 4 league campaign on Saturday 23rd March and got off to a perfect start after a severe test against a determined St. Tiarnach-Sarsfields outfit on a score-line 7-15 to 8-10.
It was certainly a day for your waterproof gear and for wearing your winter woolies because the game was played in very cold, wet, slippery and really misery conditions but in fairness despite the awful conditions it was amazingly exciting and a very entertaining match. We started the brightest and controlled the opening quarter from start to finish and really should have put more scores on the board but having said all that we held a comfortable 2-3 to 0-2 lead at the interval. Despite a poor start by St. Tiarnach Sarsfields they came out a more determined side during the second quarter as they found another gear and totally dominated the match and notched up some impressive scores to take the lead by the narrowest of margins at the midway point, Rockcorry 2-9 St. Tiarnach Sarsfields 4-4.
The third quarter was evenly balanced as both teams displayed some remarkable football in what were extremely difficult and greasy conditions and after forty-five minutes St. Tiarnach Sarsfields maintained their slight advantage leading 4-11 to 6-7. The final quarter was thrill-a-minute and being two points behind our lads used all their energy and never threw-in the towel and while the lead exchanged hands on a number of occasions we battled hard throughout the period and during the closing stages we managed to notch over some important scores to possibly just about deserve the victory on a final score Rockcorry 7-15 St. Tiarnach Sarsfields 8-10.
