Superb fare as impressive under 12’s emerge in thriller
The game of Gaelic football was the real winner today as our under 12 team edged out Aghabog in the final of the Division 5 league competition on Saturday 1st September after a fabulous contest. This was a tremendous match which was played in a welter of excitement throughout and after an absorbing encounter we gained a well-deserved victory on a score-line 5-9 to 5-5. On a glorious sunny afternoon a decent crowd made the journey to Drumhowan in anticipation of a tight, close game and they weren’t to be disappointed as both teams served up a thrilling and exhilarating contest that certainly gave both sets of supporters plenty to cheer about.
Our wee warriors took the game to Aghabog from the outset and raced into an early lead when Pauric O’Brien tapped over the first score after twenty seconds. Gavin West kicked over an excellent point, on the 2nd minute following good approach play from Curtis Roberts and Pauric O’Brien. At this stage we were in the ascendancy and when Curtis Roberts collected the ball on the 4th minute he rifled an unstoppable shot past the Aghabog goal-keeper to give us a 1-2 to 0-0 advantage.
Aghabog then got to grips with proceedings and they soon reduced the margin when they registered their first score on the 5th minute after converting a free-kick and moments later they added another point to leave the score 1-2 to 0-2 after seven minutes. Aghbog kicked wide on the 8th minute and but they continued to dominate and drew level with a wonderful goal on the 10th minute to leave both sides on 1-2 apiece. We responded on the 13th minute with a sweet point from Gavin West following good defending by Ryan Lynch but this was quickly cancelled out as Aghabog notched over another point from play. Conleth Keenan showed his finishing skills when he blasted to the net on the 15th minute but as half time approached Aghabog had the last say when they tapped over another point to leave the score Rockcorry 2-3 Aghabog 1-4.
We started the second half as we did the first and while Sean Markey kicked wide after thirty seconds we opened the scoring on the second minute when Pauric O’Brien converted a free kick. We increased our advantage when we scored a goal on the 3rd minute and when Gavin West skipped past his marker on the 6th minute his attempt at goals was well saved by the Aghabog goal-keeper and deflected over the bar for a point. From the kick-out Pauric O’Brien won possession and extended our lead with a fine point to leave the score Rockcorry 3-6 Aghabog 1-4. At this stage it appeared we were cruising but Aghabog never gave up and suddenly the momentum of the game changed when they booted the ball through for a fine goal. Inspired by this and roared on by their vociferous supporters they took the game to us and within twenty seconds bagged another goal to leave the game on a knife-edge with the scoreboard showing Rockcorry 3-6 to Aghabog 3-4.
The frantic pace of the game continued with both teams showing great desire and heart but our wee brave-hearts refused to bow the knee and gradually found their feet and produced a tremendously gutsy display that saw us extend our lead. It started, on the 12th minute, when Pauric O’Brien played the ball through to Curtis Roberts who took on his man and finished with a sublime shot to hit the back of the net and a minute later Pauric O’Brien extended our lead when he blasted the ball past the Aghabog goal-keeper to leave the score after twelve minutes 5-6 to 3-4 and put us firmly in contention during an absorbing match.
Shane Greenan showed quick reactions on the 14th minute to deny Aghabog a goal opportunity but moments later they did manage to breach are goal line after a mix up and they bagged another goal immediately afterwards to close the gap to just two points, 5-6 to 5-4. At this stage, it was still anyone’s game and all to play for and Gavin West kicked a couple of important points on the 15th and 16th minutes to stretch our lead to four points. When Caolan McPhillips was brought down on the 17th minute he dusted himself down and coolly lobbed over the free-kick to leave the score 5-9 to 5-4. The game remained in the balance as Aghabog went in search of a goal but they could not find a way past our defence and their attempt at goals on the 21st minute was deflected over the bar by Kyle Brannigan and moments later the sound of the whistle sounded to leave the final score Rockcorry 5-9 Aghabog 5-5.
Everyone associated with the team can be very proud of the team’s achievement in winning this Division 5 league title. Shane Greenan was an outstanding goal-keeper and the three players in front of him, Kyle Brannigan, Ryan Lynch and Caolan McPhillips were equally effective, and snuffed out numerous dangerous attacks and can feel proud of their displays. At midfield Pauric O’Brien and Curtis Roberts did extremely well and gave everything on the day to help gain this victory. Conleth Keenan and Sean Markey were dangerous and real livewire wing forwards while Gavin West in the centre was a constant thorn in the side of the Aghabog defence and played a major role in the win. During the league campaign we had some fine reserves to call on in earlier matches and the following players were important members of the panel since the start of the year; Emma McKeown, Orla Clerkin, Chole O’Brien, Aaron Smyth, Daire Dillon, Aaron McPhillips and Leon Jones.
On behalf of the club I would like to sincerely congratulate Conor, Anthony, Sean, Declan and all the boys and girls for a fantastic win. Well done.
