Our under 12 footballers travelled to Gavan Duffy Park, Monaghan to play Fergal O’Hanlon’s in the Gerry’s Prepared Veg Division 2B Shield Final on Saturday 7th September and as expected there was very little between these sides as they served up a thrilling and a very enjoyable contest that ebbed and flowed from the throw-in. In the end, however, it was Fergal O’Hanlon’s ability to pick-off some impressive scores during the second half that was ultimately the difference as they secured the title by the narrowest of margins winning 3-2 to 1-9 and on behalf of the club I congratulate them on their victory.
The game was played in wet and slippery conditions and we started the match in flying fashion and were easily the better team during the opening exchanges but unfortunately we did not convert enough of our chances onto the scoreboard. We did take the lead, on the 5th minute, with a superb point from Conleth Keenan but this was quickly cancelled out when Fergal O’Hanlons equalised and they extended their lead when they converted free-kicks on the 12th and 13th minutes to lead 0-1 to 0-3. Conleth Keenan landed our first goal on the 14th minute after being set-up by Curtis Roberts but Fergal O’Hanlon’s responded with a terrific point to leave the sides all square 1-1 to 0-4. With half time approaching Conleth Keenan raised a green flag again with a fine individual effort but with virtually the last kick of the half Fergal O’Hanlon’s pointed brilliantly to leave the scoreboard showing Rockcorry 2-1 Fergal O’Hanlon’s 0-5 at the interval.
When play resumed Conleth Keenan stretched our advantage when he pointed after a sustained bout of pressure but Fergal O’Hanlon’s bounced back and nullified that with a fine goal to level proceedings 2-2 to 1-5. The energetic Curtis Roberts had a goal scoring opportunity on the 4th minute but his attempt was stopped acrobatically on the line by the Fergal O’Hanlon’s goal-keeper and pushed wide for a forty-five. Moments later, the lively Conleth Keenan got a sniff at goal and once again he showed his accuracy finishing in style to put us back in front leading by three points. That score sadly proved to be our last of the game as Fergal O’Hanlon’s upped the ante and started to dominate proceedings and notched over four unanswered points to seal the win on a final score-line Rockcorry 3-2 Fergal O’Hanlon’s 1-9.
Hard luck boys and girls it was a great achievement to get to the final and on behalf of the club I would like to thank the players for all the work they put in during the year and thank the mentors John Elliott & Colm Donnelly and off course the first aid lady Marian Larmer.
