Rockcorry 0-14 Corduff 2-6

Reserve team show Spirit & Guts to claim the spoils

Our reserve team bounced back from their disappointing performance against Eire Og last weekend  with a spirited and gutsy performance when they played Corduff in the Platinum Tanks Reserve Football League Division 2, on Sunday 16th March, and the lads showed magnificent character and energy to secure the league spoils on a final score-line Rockcorry 0-14 to Corduff 2-6.

While we were playing against a strong breeze we started the quickest and registered the opening score on the 3rd minute when Dwayne Rooney tapped over after receiving a measured pass from Anthony Tate. Corduff kicked wide on the 4th minute and we extended our lead when good approach play from Garry Calvert and Martin Carroll teed-up Dwayne Rooney who split the uprights with aplomb. Corduff converted a free-kick on the 9th minute and shortly afterwards we were punished when they broke through our defence and crashed the ball to the back of the net to leave the score 0-2 to 1-1 after ten minutes. The evergreen Garry Calvert then showed his accuracy with a delightful point after Martin Carroll did all the hard work but Corduff instantly replied as they broke down the field at pace and with the simplest of opportunities bagged their second goal and moments later they lobbed over a free-kick on the 14th minute to leave the score Rockcorry 0-3 Corduff 2-2.

We missed scoring opportunities on the 16th and 17th minutes with Dwayne Rooney and Christopher Greenan both kicking wide but Martin Carroll pulled a point back on the 18th minute with a beautiful effort to reduce the gap. Corduff converted a free-kick on the 24th minute which initially appeared wide but after consultation with the umpire the referee awarded the score. Dwayne Rooney continued his fine shooting and pointed brilliantly on the 27th minute following good play by Garry Calvert to leave the score at the interval Rockcorry 0-5 Corduff 2-3.

We started the second half in determined fashion and without doubt this was our best period as the lads produced some superb passages of play and the four point deficit was quickly wiped out after scoring six remarkable points without reply. Garry Calvert started the comeback and within forty seconds from the throw-in added a point following a good build-up that included Colin Quinn and Keelan Clerkin. Dwayne Rooney, with a strong breeze on his back, sailed over a long range free-kick on the 3rd minute and when Garry Calvert collected the ensuing kick-out he sweetly and calmly lobbed the ball over the black-spot to leave only a single point separating the sides. When Anthony Tate was brought down, on the 11th minute, Garry Calvert quickly delivered a short free-kick to the booming Colin Quinn who glanced at the goalposts and sent over a quality effort.

The energetic Keelan Clerkin, who gave a particularly impressive and powerful performance, made a surging run forward on the 13th minute and delivered a pin-point pass to Garry Calvert who in-turn was hauled down and Dwayne Rooney once again showed his precision and dissected the uprights to put us one point ahead.  Colin Quinn and Martin Carroll combined well and a quick one-two set-up Dwayne Rooney who finished with a nice score to increase our lead to two points, Rockcorry 0-11 Corduff 2-3.

However, Corduff soon began to find their feet and responded with two quick points in succession on the 17th and 18th minutes to level proceedings and they regained the lead on the 21st minute with another fine point. The game was now end to end and when Martin Carroll was fouled on the 22nd minute Dwayne Rooney duly converted the free-kick and a minute later when Dwayne Rooney was brought down Anthony Tate stepped up and coolly tapped the ball over the bar to put us ahead by a single point. A one point advantage is always a dangerous lead and tensions both on and along the line were high and when Colin Quinn and Dwayne Rooney kicked wide on the 26th and 29th minutes it definitely didn’t help to calm the nerves! However, a couple of minutes into additional time Ross Murray found himself in a forward position and pointed in style which incidentally turned out to be the last kick of the match as the final whistle sounded and the game ended Rockcorry 0-14 Corduff 2-6.

This was a rewarding performance for the lads as they all put in tremendous hard-work and their commitment was truly unquestionable and it was needed against a quality Corduff outfit. Moving forward all players are requested to keep up attendance at training on Tuesday and Friday nights and in addition please make use of the new strength and conditioning facilities.
