Narrow Victory for Senior Team
Our senior team achieved a narrow, but deserved victory, over Eire Og in the Monaghan Electrical Intermediate Football League last Friday evening (29th April) on a score-line Rockcorry 0-12 Eire Og 1-8. Both teams had a number of chances during the opening exchanges to open the scoring but were all off target and it wasn’t until the 9th minute when Mark Daly converted a free-kick, after Martin Carroll was hauled to the ground, that the first score was registered. Eire Og responded immediately as they were awarded a penalty a minute later and they made no mistake from the spot kick to hit the back of the net. They extended their lead on the 12th minute when they pointed a free-kick.
At this stage of the game we were being outplayed as Eire Og defended in numbers and we were finding it very difficult to breakthrough there defence. However, when Mark McGuirk was fouled on the 20th minute Mark Daly coolly converted the free-kick to narrow the gap. On the 21st minute, Eire Og had a goal opportunity but Keith Daly was the right man in the right place to make a superb block on the line to put the ball out for a forty-five which was duly fired over to increase their lead to three points 0-2 to 1-2. Mark McGuirk pulled one back on the 26th minute following good work by Keith Daly and Noel Carroll but this was quickly cancelled out when Eire Og notched over another point shortly afterwards.
We enjoyed our best spell of the first half during injury time as we rallied before the break and with some good approach play by Liam Connolly and Noel Carroll, Martin Carroll set up Stephen McGuirk who scored a lovely point, on the 31st minute, to close the deficit to two points. Moments later Fergal McGeough was brought down a couple of metre beyond the forty-five metre line and Mark Daly floated over a marvellous long range free-kick. On the 33rd minute Liam Connolly collected a pass from Fergal McGeough and finished neatly over the bar to leave the sides level at the break Rockcorry 0-6 Eire Og 1-3.
When play resumed we certainly improved and were slightly on top and took the lead, on the 4th minute, when Colin Quinn scored a sweet point following good attack play by Fergal McGeough and Garry Calvert. A couple of minutes later Eire Og broke through our defence and raced towards the goals and Jamie Smith showed good reactions as he pulled off a wonderful save to dent them a goal opportunity. However, Eire Og managed to level proceedings on the 8th minute when they slotted over a fine point but we restored our advantage on the 12th minute after an Eire Og player was penalised for over carrying and Mark Daly converted the free-kick. Four minutes later when Fergal McGeough was fouled it was Mark Daly again who showed his accuracy by dissecting the posts with his free-taking. A minute later, we stretched our lead after Mark McGuirk was dragged down and his brother Stephen took a quick free to Dwayne Rooney who notched over a fantastic point to open up a three point lead 0-10 to 1-4.
Eire Og closed the gap back to a single point when they scored on the 18th and 21st minutes. A minute later, Mark Daly sent over another fine point from a free-kick after Mark McGuirk was fouled and when Noel Carroll soloed through, on the 24th minute, he fired over a superb point to increase our lead to three points 0-12 to 1-6. Eire Og never gave up and they regained the momentum and scored two points in the space of three minutes to leave just a solitary point separating the sides. Undoubtedly the major talking point of the game came on the 29th minute when we were reduced to fourteen men after our goal-keeper, Jamie Smith was dismissed after he got himself involved in an incident and was instantly sent off.
The anxiety and tension during the final minutes was unbearable as Eire Og threw everything forward in an effort to salvage the game and thankfully our defence remained strong and showed great character to deny Eire Og any simple scoring opportunities and at the final whistle the score was Rockcorry 0-12 Eire Og 1-8.
