On Tuesday 14th August our minor team, Rock Sarsfields, travelled to St. Oliver Plunkett’s Park where they played Emyvale in the first round of the Maguire Transport minor football championship. The home side set the pace during the early exchanges and had a 0-2 to 0-0 lead after five minutes. As the game progressed we quickly turned things around and points from Dion Conlan, Conor McDonald, Fergal McGeough and Lorcan Smyth and a wonderful goal by Mark Quigley we enjoyed a 0-3 to 1-5 advantage going into injury time. However, two minutes into additional time Emyvale broke at pace and split our defence and rifled the ball to the back of the net to leave the score at the interval Emyvale 1-3 Rock Sarsfields 1-5.
On the resumption of play Emyvale were first to score and went on to control most of the second half proceedings and scored an impressive 1-3 during the first ten minutes to convert a two point deficit into a four point lead, leading 2-6 to 1-5. Fergal McGeough pulled a point back on the 11th minute but Emyvale quickly responded in style and the following ten minutes they fired over six points without reply to lead 2-12 to 1-6. Our lads continued to work hard and were rewarded on the 23rd minute when Gerard Graham added a point and moments later Lorcan Smyth found the net from close range to close the deficit back to five points, 2-12 to 2-7. Unfortunately, Emyvale were not finished and notched over two more points while Fergal McGeough completed the scoring when he tapped over to leave the final score Emyvale 2-14 Rock Sarsfields 2-8.
