Seniors earn a share of the spoils
A late free-kick converted by Lorcan Smyth ensured our senior team shared the spoils with Doohamlet in this tightly-fought Monaghan Electrical intermediate football league game played on Sunday 10th June. In a highly entertaining game of football, played on a beautiful day, the league leaders Doohamlet were the quickest out of the blocks and during the opening exchanges they were the better team as they totally dominated and quickly established a 0-5 to 0-0 advantage after thirteen minutes. It looked anything but promising during the first quarter as we looked nervous early on and struggled to get into the game and one could have thought that we were suffering from the proverbial “SMS” (Sunday Morning Syndrome) but instead the lads dug deep and showed their true character most effectively to produce a remarkable performance.
Lorcan Smyth stopped the rot on the 15th minute when he curled over a beautiful score, from thirty metres, to register our first score. This was quickly followed when Paul McKeown notched over a peach of a point after good approach play by Stephen Lynch and Keelan Clerkin. Shortly afterwards Paul McKeown was in the thick of the action again as he wriggled his way past a number of Doohamlet defenders from the right wing and kicked a nice point following a decent build-up from Dwayne Rooney, Lorcan Smyth and Mark Daly to leave the scoreboard more respectable looking after eighteen minutes, 0-5 to 0-3.
Doohamlet edged further in front on the 20th minute with a fine point from play but our response was swift as Mark Daly sailed over a superb point and when Lorcan Smyth was fouled he converted the free-kick to leave the scoreboard showing Doohamlet 0-6 Rockcorry 0-5 after twenty-four minutes. We were given renewed hope on the 28th minute when Stephen Lynch, who was lined out at centre-half back and had an outstanding match, surged forward and was tripped in the large parallelogram and the referee had no choice but to award a penalty which Mark Daly blasted home to leave the score Doohamlet 0-6 Rockcorry 1-5. A foul on Lorcan Smyth on the 30th minute gave us another point-scoring opportunity and after he dusted himself down the young lad showed composure and split the uprights to stretch our lead to three points. However, Doohamlet had the last say of the half and pointed on the 33rd minute to leave the score at the interval Doohamlet 0-7 Rockcorry 1-6.
On the restart we looked sharp and came out with all guns blazing and Mark Daly fired between the uprights after fifty seconds following good approach play from Martin Carroll, Keelan Clerkin and Noel Carroll. We extended our advantage on the 4th minute when Dwayne Rooney kicked a sweet point from play to put us in a strong position, 0-7 to 1-8. Doohamlet battled on and closed the deficit when they kicked points on the 5th and 6th minutes but with ten minutes of the second half played we went five points clear courtesy of an opportunist goal from Noel Carroll who flicked the ball past the advancing Doohamlet goal-keeper to leave the score 0-9 to 2-8.
However, a strong and assertive Doohamlet team that always looked dangerous enjoyed their best spell for the next ten minutes or so as they found that extra gear and breached our defence on the 16th minute, in a purposeful move, that yielded a goal to narrow the gap back to two points. They pointed again on the 20th minute and were on level terms by the 22nd minute to leave the score Doohamlet 1-11 Rockcorry 2-8. With six minutes remaining the home side scored a fine point as they capitalised on a poor kick-out but we soon recovered our composure and when Keith Daly came forward he was brought down and Lorcan Smyth converted the free-kick to level proceedings, 1-12 to 2-9.
There were plenty of nervous moments and loads of drama during the closing stages of the game as both teams had opportunities to take the lead but no team added to their tally and the match ended all square with both teams content with a share of the spoils. The final score Doohamlet 1-12 Rockcorry 2-9.
