Our minor team played Cremartin, on Tuesday 21st August, in the second round of the Maguire Transport minor football championship and unfortunately we suffered another defeat against a strong and determined Cremartin outfit on a scoreline 3-15 to 2-9.
Some of the football played was top class with the movement and passing particularly eye-catching and Cremartin started the brightest and opened the scoring on the first minute with a fine point from play and they doubled their advantage on the 5th minute with another neat point. We got off the mark moments later when Lorcan Smyth fired over but the following ten minutes or so belonged to Cremartin as they dominated the game and notched up an impressive 1-4 to lead 1-6 to 0-1 after eighteen minutes.
In truth, it was a mixed performance by our lads but we did put some good moves together throughout the game, many of them finished with well taken scores. The pick of the moves was one on the 20th minute, which started on our full back line and involved Finnian Smith, Iain McConnon, Gerard Graham, Fergal McGeough and Lorcan Smyth who teed up Conor McDonald and he blasted the ball to the top corner of the net to close the gap to five points. However, it was Cremartin’s ability to step it up a gear that was the main difference in this highly entertaining match and they replied with a couple of quick-fire points to increase their advantage, leading 1-8 to 1-1. Finnian Smith made a timely interception on the 25th minute that instigated a swift move down the field and when Fergal McGeough collected the ball on the twenty-one metre line he hit the roof of the net with a sublime finish. Lorcan Smyth and John McGuirk tagged on additional points on the 27th and 30th minutes respectively to leave the score at the interval Cremartin 1-8 Rock-Sarsfields 2-3.
The second half began in a similar fashion to the first with Cremartin on top in most sections of the pitch and increased their advantage adding a further 1-2 to their tally during the first four minutes to lead 2-10 to 2-3. The lads continued to work hard and both teams exchanged points before Cremartin pounced for their third goal to take a comfortable 3-12 to 2-5 lead after ten minutes. To the lads credit they plugged away gallantly and added points from Mark Quigley, Lorcan Smyth, Finnian Smith and Fergal McGeough. However, we couldn’t make the ultimate break-through as Cremartin soaked up the pressure and in fairness were the more accurate team and hit further scores towards the closing stages of the game to secure a nine point victory on a score-line Cremartin 3-15 Rock-Sarsfields 2-9.
