Cremartin 0-11 Rockcorry 1-13

Senior team bounce back with fine win over Cremartin

Our senior team bounced back from their recent defeat against Donaghmoyne the previous week to secure a deserved victory over Cremartin in the Monaghan Electrical intermediate football league game, played on Friday 31st August. We built the foundations for this win when we opened up a lead of 0-5 to 0-10 after the first moiety having played some delightful football with the running off the ball by players a joy to watch. In fairness, the lads worked hard, they dug deep and put up a strong resilient performance and acquitted themselves very well and all played their part to achieve this win.

There was never much between the sides during the opening exchanges as both teams were evenly matched and those present did not have to wait too long for the opening score because Martin Carroll registered the first score after two minutes with a charming point from the left wing. Cremartin equalised shortly afterwards with fine point from play but Mark Daly restored our lead when he sailed over a lovely score following good approach play by Fergal McGeough and Keelan Clerkin. Fergal McGeough increased our lead when he converted a free-kick after Noel Carroll was brought down but Cremartin responded with points on the 9th and 12th minutes to draw the sides level with 0-3 apiece.

A determined Keelan Clerkin battles his way through the Cremartin defence

At this juncture, a close hour’s football appeared to be on the cards however within the space of five minutes we gained a three point advantage. We were looking the sharper, more coherent side and Fergal McGeough shot over our fourth point after good harassing work by Martin Carroll and Paul McKeown. Mark Daly tapped over a free-kick on the 17th minute following a foul on Stephen Lynch and when Keith Daly broke down a Cremartin attack, on the 19th minute, it instigated a swift move down the field and when his older brother, Mark, collected the ball he showed good strength to shrug off a couple of defenders and fired over a sweet point to leave the score 0-3 to 0-6.

Cremartin kept in touch when they converted a free-kick on the 20th minute and they reduced the deficit to a single point a couple minutes later when they pointed from play, 0-5 to 0-6. Normality then resumed as we rattled over four points without reply, with Stephen Lynch getting the first after a trademark run by Noel Carroll. Fergal McGeough added the second when his effort at goals was well-saved by the Cremartin goal-keeper and deflected over the bar. The resultant kick-out was fielded superbly by Lorcan Smyth who teed up Mark Daly and he sailed over a monstrous point. Mark Daly scored his fifth point from a free-kick on the 28th minute to leave the half time score Cremartin 0-5 Rockcorry 0-10.

Some stern words were obviously said at half time as Cremartin began with all guns blazing and staged a mini revival at the start of the second half and managed to tap over points on the 3rd and 10th minutes to close the gap back to three points, 0-7 to 0-10. However, their comeback was abruptly halted as we began to re-assert our authority on the game. All players worked tigerishly and turned in a fine workmanlike display to deny the Cremartin men time and room on the ball. As a result of this approach a flurry of scores arrived during a ten minute spell. It started on the 11th minute with a Jamie Smith kick-out to Stephen Lynch who delivered a measured pass to Garry Calvert and he found Mark McGuirk who linked up with Paul Mckeown who slipped inside his opponent and slotted over a stylish point. Fergal McGeough popped over a splendid point on the 15th minute and immediately afterwards Paul Mckeown did not let his opponent OUT EASY and forced his opponent into a mistake and when Fergal McGeough gathered the loose ball he weaved his way through the Cremartin defence and from twenty metres he drilled a low shot to the back of the net to leave the score 0-7 to 1-12.

"No Way Through", Garry Calvert halts the Cremartin attack

Our lead was stretched to nine points when Mark Daly lobbed over another long-range free-kick on the 20th minute and barring a complete collapse there was no way back for Cremartin. With five minutes remaining  we seemed to take are foot off the accelerator as Cremartin finished the strongest and replied with four unanswered points but we were strong enough to hold sway in the end to run out comfortable winners on a score-line Cremartin 0-11 Rockcorry 1-13.

This is precisely the boost we needed and will have given our team management and players a much needed lift after our exit from the championship last week. The players will take heart from this and it should provide the motivation for a good end to the league campaign. They now face another crunch game against Sean McDermott’s on Sunday 2nd September at 12.30pm and will know that nothing less than our best will do if we are to progress and collect maximum points this weekend.  Well done lads and keep working hard and supporting each other.
