Corduff 0-10 Rockcorry 1-5

Seniors get punished for indecisiveness

The senior team travelled to play Corduff in the Monaghan Electrical intermediate football league on Friday 11th May and a hungrier Corduff side were far more economical and ruthless in front of goals and possibly could have won this game by a greater margin as they secured the victory after a closely-fought, but often scrappy encounter on a score-line Corduff 0-10 Rockcorry 1-5.

Despite the pleasant sunshine (which unfortunately did little to lift our moods as we left the grounds) it felt more like a winter’s evening than a lovely summer’s night! The game commenced with Corduff playing with the aid of strong breeze and they opened the scoring on the 3rd minute with a fine point from play. We got off the mark when Mark Daly converted a free-kick on the 4th minute after Noel Carroll was brought down but Corduff restored their lead moments later with another neat point from play. It was all square by the 7th minute when Noel Carroll curled over a sweet point following good approach play by Garry Calvert and Paul McKeown. However, as the half progressed Corduff enjoyed a fantastic spell and stamped their authority on the game and notched over some terrific scores to stretch their advantage to five points leading 0-7 to 0-2 after twenty-five minutes.Mark McGuirk and Noel Carroll kicked wide on the 28th and 30th minutes and as the game dragged into injury time we got somewhat of a lift when Dwayne Rooney was hauled down in the large parallelogram and Mark Daly coolly blasted home the spot kick to narrow the gap and leave the score at the interval Corduff 0-7 Rockcorry 1-2.

With the wind on our backs for the second period Mark McGuirk hit a classy point on the first minute to reduce the gap to the bare minimum (0-7 to 1-3). Both teams were guilty of missing scoring opportunities during the next ten minutes and when Paul McKeown skipped away from his marker he was through one-on-one with the Corduff goal-keeper and had goal written all over it but his shot came close to crossing the line it was subsequently cleared and Corduff responded immediately down at the other end with a point to move two points clear again (0-8 to 1-3).

A couple of minutes later Stephen McGuirk pointed from a free-kick after Paul McKeown was brought down and we had opportunities to draw level but indecisive and hesitant shooting by our forwards was punished as Corduff came straight down the field and grabbed another point from play to restore their two point advantage, leading 0-9 to 1-4 after twenty-two minutes. With time ticking away we needed to up our game considerably and after some good approach play the energetic and youthful Mark McGuirk pointed superbly on the 23rd minute to leave just the minimum between the sides. At this stage both sides were giving it there all and as we searched for that all important equalising score it wasn’t to be and it was our old rivals who gained the spoils as they finished with a flourish and notched over their final point on the 26th minute to leave the final score Corduff 0-10 Rockcorry 1-5.

On reflection, while we enjoyed plenty of possession far too often we needlessly gave the ball away and the amount of misplaced passes, unforced errors and indecision at vital times will no doubt give our team management plenty of things to consider! There is still a lot of work to do and improvements will be necessary before we meet them again in the first round of the McGuigan Builders intermediate championship but moving forward every player needs to stand up and be counted if we are to achieve our goals this year. Remember, When you lose, don’t lose the lesson”!
