Under 14 Shield Final

Our under 14 footballers made the short journey to O’Rahilly Park, Latton last  Saturday 29th September to take on Clontribret in the final of the Division 6 Shield competition. When these sides met a couple of weeks ago it was a fairly one-sided affair but this match turned out to be a real humdinger between two very committed sides who battled hard for every ball. It was a close game from start to finish and at times very nerve-racking and both set of players are due credit for playing some superb football and contributing towards a thoroughly entertaining spectacle. In the end we managed to secure the victory over a gallant Clontibret team on a score-line Rockcorry 5-5 Clontibret 2-10. Amid tremendous scenes of jubilation team captain Mark Duffy received the Shield Cup from Patricia Smith (PRO of the County Board Youth Committee) and Gerry McElroy of Gerry’s Prepared Veg and on behalf of the club I extend a sincere word of congratulations to team manager Felix Granaghan, youth officer Pascal Smyth and all the players for their wonderful achievement. It was a great team performance and well done to the young players who put in an enormous effort into their game and training all year and this was highlighted by Ollie McQuillan (vice-chairman) Pascal Smyth (youth officer) and Felix Granaghan (team manager) at the after match celebrations in St. Mary’s Hall who praised their commitment and dedication. Furthermore, the involvement of parents was also applauded for their support, encouragement and assistance they give the kids during the year. On a final note, these lads have showed that the future is bright for Rockcorry GAA football but the key to success will be the continuation of our good coaching policies to ensure a steady stream of young players coming forward to take over from the current players whose exploits excite our admiration today. We must continue to nurture these youngsters who will be the future players of the club tomorrow. Well done everyone.
