Club Notes 29th April

National League Title

On behalf of everyone from the Rockcorry GAA club I would like to congratulate the Monaghan senior footballers and the backroom management team for their impressive performance and fabulous win against Donegal in the Allianz National Football League Division 2 Final at Croke Park last Sunday. Well done lads, keep up the good work.

Platinum Tanks Reserve Champioship

The next outing for our reserve players will be the preliminary round of the reserve football championship (Crawley Cup) when they take on Carrickmacross. The game is fixed for Sunday 4th May at Pairc Naomh Mhuire and throw-in time is 2.00pm.

Under 12 Spring League

Our under 12 footballers travelled to Pairc Emmett last Saturday 26th April to play Aghabog in the Gerry’s Prepared Veg Spring League (Zone G) and for most parts of the match we dominated and were more clinical in our finishing and secured the spoils. The game was played in dry and pleasant conditions and during the opening half we played with the wind and looked the stronger outfit and held a comfortable lead at the interval. While the home side got themselves more into the game during the second half they were unfortunate not to have put more scores on the board as they squandered a number of scoring opportunities which ultimately proved costly. On the other hand, we continued to look impressive and adopted a very encouraging short passing game to seal the victory on a score-line Aghabog 0-6 Rockcorry 0-20. There next game is against Eire Og which clashes with First Communion so hopefully both clubs can agree a suitable alternative date and time. A selection of action photographs can be viewed on our official website www.rockcorrygaa.ie.

Under 14 Fixtures

The next outing for the under 14 footballers is this Monday 5th May when they play Toome. The game is fixed for Paic Naomh Mhuire and throw-in time is 7pm.

Under 16 Fixtures

Our under 16 footballers played Clones in the Gerry’s Prepared Veg Division 4 league last Thursday 24th April and recorded a comfortable win. We were slow out of the blocks as Clones had a blistering start and built up a 0-0 to 0-3 lead after ten minutes. At this stage it did not look good but after a tough first ten minutes we settled and started to play with more purpose and merited our 2-8 to 1-4 advantage at the break. Our superiority continued in the second half as we dominated proceedings and played some impressive attacking football and chalked up some super scores. Clones tried hard to get back into the game, and in fairness they never threw in the towel, but despite their best efforts they failed to  convert their possession onto the scoreboard and we ran out with a convincing victory on a score-line Rockcorry 4-15 Clones 2-4. This was a welcomed victory for the team after the heavy defeat against Latton in their last outing. There were some fantastic performances from the lads and will no doubt please the team management (Felix Granaghan & Emlyn Patterson). Their next game is tonight, Thursday 1st May when they entertain Cremartin at Pairc Naomh Mhuire and throw-in time is 7.15pm. Can all players be in the dressing-rooms before 6.40pm.

Field of Dreams

Ever imagine that you would play in Croke Park? Well last Sunday, Aaron Smyth, one of our under 12 players, was selected to play during the half-time exhibition match at the Monaghan v Donegal Allianz National Football League final in Croke Park. I imagine it was a wonderful experience and one that will definitely be remembered for years to come. Well done Aaron, I hope you had a great day and hopefully it’ll only be the start of more appearances in Croke Park in the future.

Go Games Blitz

A very enjoyable and exciting Go Games was held last Saturday 26th April when our under 8 and under 10 footballers travelled to Sean McDermott’s to take part in the blitz competition. The lovely weather conditions added to the excitement and from one corner of the field to the other it was great to see all the children from various clubs playing the game and they appeared to enjoy every minute. Competing clubs on the day included Ballybay, Drumhown, Sean McDermott’s and our own bunch of wee warriors and it is always great to see a good turnout of kids perform at this level and enjoying themselves in a fun and non-competitive environment and that’s what’s it’s all about. All kids acquitted themselves exceptionally well, showing plenty of enthusiasm and displayed loads of energy and the signs are positive for a bright future. At this level no shouting or abuse from the side-line is tolerated but I have to admit the repeated shouts and screams from mentors and nervous parents “THE OTHER WAY…YOU’RE PLAYING THE OTHER WAY” was quite amusing! On that note, it was wonderful to see so many parents there to support and encourage the children and a special word of mention to the hard working coaches & mentors who freely give up their time voluntarily on a Saturday morning to help organise and look after the future players of the club. Its people like this that makes the Gaelic Athletic Association so special and we appreciate all the hard work you do. Well done everyone, we will look forward to the next blitz with huge excitement and anticipation. Finally, many thanks to the Sean McDermott’s club for hosting the blitz and on behalf of the club I would like to sincerely thank all the parents for their on-going commitment for travelling to the blitz and for supporting all the players. Keep up the good work.

Go Games Referee

We all know the important role referees play within the Gaelic Athletic Association. They are an essential part of the GAA structure and without them there simply wouldn’t be any games!  That is why I have to applaud two of our under 16 footballers, namely Garreth Smyth and Caoilainn Gallagher, who volunteered to carry out this crucial role at the Go Games Blitzs. The lads got their first taste of taking charge today, Saturday 26th April, when they refereed at the Go Games Blitz at Sean McDermott’s and on behalf of the club I would like to thank the lads for taking on this role and wish them the very best of luck.
