Monaghan Electrical Intermediate League Semi-Final
Van Morrison had a huge hit a number of years ago with “My mother told me there would be days like this”. Well last Sunday was one of those days and while no cup or trophy was on offer or title to be won our three point victory over Donaghmoyne earned us a place in this year’s Monaghan Electrical intermediate football final and promotion. It was a gritty and spirited performance from the team against a determined and physically strong Donaghmoyne side and the match certainly gave the huge crowd excellent value for money and was a thrilling contest to watch. In fairness, the quality of football was not pretty at times (and was extremely nerve-racking) but we were in determined mood and the overall work rate of the team was very impressive. Team-work was the key to the victory. There’s no point singling out names because everyone contributed to a courageous display. From one to fifteen they played as a team, they worked hard for one another and that’s the reason we secured the win on a final score-line Rockcorry 0-10 Donaghmoyne 1-4. When the final whistle blew Pairc Naomh Mhuire exploded into frenzy of madness. The smiles on the player’s faces after the game was a joy to see and the supporters jumping up and down were euphoric. It also was a very emotional occasion and in some cases it was all too much as tears started to flow and others came very, very close! To witness what is truly a special and memorable moment in the clubs history is an amazing feeling. It was an extremely proud day for the club and our community, for all players, for all supporters, for all club members and committee members who have worked tirelessly for many, many years to reach this dreamlike moment. I know there were proud and passionate ‘Rock Gaels’ looking down from the veranda of Heaven last Sunday, full of pride, supporting and cheering on the lads and they would have certainly enjoyed this wonderful occasion (and it’s not over yet!!!). It has taken a long time to arrive but after knocking on the senior door for the last five or six seasons and suffering plenty of upsets along the way the TEAM of 2012 finally graduated to the senior league and will be rubbing shoulders with the so called “big boys” of Monaghan football next year. Obviously, we’re delighted that we’ve achieved senior status and I don’t want to be regarded a party pooper BUT there’s still a job to finish. The aim now is to regroup and refocus our minds for the difficult challenge that lies ahead this Sunday against a formidable Doohamlet side. We need to be up for this match and we need to bring our ‘A’ game. We must be mentally strong and show the same level of intensity, desire and raw hunger that has got us to this stage. Stand up and be counted and give as good as you get and leave every ounce of energy on the playing field and for the last time this year, although you may it once or twice in the final, Don’t let them out easy! Good luck lads and I’m off to get my prescription for high blood pressure tablets ahead of the game…it’s not easy watching these games from the side-lines!!!
