Monaghan GAA Gala Banquet
In the words of Frank Brady (Monaghan minor team manager) “cream always rises to the top” and it was certainly a case of Crème de la crème last Friday night when Gaels from all over the county travelled to the Hillgrove Hotel where Monaghan GAA hosted a Gala Banquet to honour and pay tribute to the victorious Senior and Minor teams that secured Ulster championship titles in 2013. It was an historic year for the county and the occasion was marked in fine style with a prestigious black-tie gala dinner and it was wonderful to see all the players and back-room teams swapping their tracksuits or Monaghan jersey’s for a smart black-tie suit. In addition, the victorious senior team of 1988 returned for a nostalgic reunion to mark the 25th anniversary of their Ulster title triumph when they defeated Tyrone and it was a great opportunity to go down memory lane and relive some of the glory days and honour a team of legends. It really was a special night of celebration and a very enjoyable evening and on behalf of the Rockcorry GAA club I would like to extend once again a massive well done to the management teams and all the players for providing us with wonderful memories during 2013 that we shall cherish forever and we look forward to next year’s campaign with great excitement and anticipation.

Under 21 County Trails
I have been informed by our youth officer, Pascal Smyth, that the following players Keelan Clerkin, Mark McGuirk, Fergal McGeough & Lorcan Smyth have been attending the county under 21 trails for the past couple of weeks. Over the year the lads put in some powerful and outstanding performances for our senior team and on behalf of everyone from the club I would like to wish them well in their endeavours to attain a place on the county under 21 panel. Go out and give it your best lads.
NUI Galway Captain
Well done to Lorcan Smyth who was recently named captain of the NUIG freshers team. Obviously, from knowing the lad this is not entirely unexpected because Lorcan has been a valuable member of our senior team throughout the year and even in his young days exemplifies all aspects of what we expect in a GAA player. On behalf of everyone at the club our heartiest congratulations to you and we wish you all the best in your future endeavours.
The club recently purchased branded hoodies for our underage members and for adult members. The gear will be available next weekend and it is envisaged to start handing them out in St. Mary’s Hall. I would encourage all our underage players to wear the club gear with pride and please expect a text message during the week confirming exact details of collection.

Following Anthony Tate’s recent 40th birthday party the last bit of business was the formal cheque presentation to the two very worthy charities namely Cootehill Community Cancer Care Support Group and the Irish Heart Foundation. The total amount raised from the event was €2,662-00. It was an amazing night and a fun challenge that raised many smiles and provided plenty of entertainment and once again well done to Anthony and his family for organising the event and fair-play to Dwayne Rooney, Martin Carroll, Aiden Sheridan and Pauric Sherry for allowing themselves to be shaved and thank you to everyone who made donations.
