Club Notes 19th February

Juvenile Presentation Night

Our juvenile presentation night was held in St. Mary’s Hall last Monday 18th February and it was yet another wonderful occasion. All silverware won last year was on display including the Mick Duffy Cup that Ballybay GAA won and the most prestigious piece of silverware within our games the Sam Maguire Cup. Both our club chairman, Jimmy McGeough and our youth officer, Pascal Smyth, addressed the huge crowd and complimented all players who represented the club last year and congratulated those who were lucky enough to win trophies. They emphasised the importance of fun and enjoyment of playing the game and reiterated the important role of parents and thanked them for their continued support and encouragement. They highlighted that 2012 was a remarkable year for the club and our juvenile teams and paid tribute to the coaches and team mentors who put in a great effort and time throughout the year and without their dedication we would not be able to provide games for the kids. Special guest on the night was Ballybay & County Monaghan star Paul Finlay who presented medals to the victorious under 12 and under 14 players and on behalf of the club many thanks to Paul who posed for photographs with the kids and their families. Lots of photographs were taken so please log onto to view a selection. Finally, I would like to say a massive well done to all the kids and we hope you continue to work hard and enjoy your time playing with the club during the year ahead.

Charity Race Night

Being club PRO definitely has its perks and over the next couple of weeks I will be taking the liberty to promote a Charity Race Night. It takes place on Friday 15th March in Fitzpatrick’s Bar & Lounge and all proceeds will be donated to the Irish Heart Foundation. This event is certain to generate great interest and plenty of laughs as unlike the traditional race night, this fund raiser there will be no TV screens or films of real horse races! It will be a night with a difference and you are guaranteed a fantastic night of fun & frenzied atmosphere with racing action with a twist so what better way to get in the spirit of St. Patrick’s weekend by painting the village red! You can support this fund raiser by sponsoring a race at €50 or sponsoring a line for €10 each. Everyone is welcome to attend and your support is deeply appreciated for this very worthy cause.

Please note that club membership will close on Sunday 31st March.

New Referee

We all know that refereeing is not an easy job, it’s a thankless job, and sometimes we may not always agree on some of their decisions but it is a job that needs to be done and is crucial to the association and the on-going survival of our games. That is why I have to applaud Fergal McGeough who has volunteered to take up this arduous role for the club and we sincerely wish him all the best. The club has always had a strong team of referees representing the club and I hope they and everyone within the club will give him support and words of encouragement as his takes on his new role.

All the Best

Congratulations to the St. Marcartan’s team who defeated St. Patrick’s Academy last Saturday.  The team who is managed by Pascal Smyth and is captained by his son Lorcan Smyth have now secured a semi-final spot in the MacRory Cup campaign and we wish them all the best when they take on St. Pauls, Bessbrook, Armagh.
