Club Notes 12th July

Parish Donation

The club is proud of its community values and the warm support we receive from the people of the parish and surrounding areas. As part of our ongoing support towards the community we have generously decided to make a sizeable donation to the parish fund from the money collected on the gate at our vintage hay day on Sunday 24th July. Therefore, by attending the vintage hay festival day you will not only be supporting the club but you will also be helping the parish so your attendance and contribution would be deeply appreciated and we look forward to seeing you there.

Sandwiches & Buns

They say “many hands make light work” and with our upcoming hay festival weekend fast approaching the club is looking for volunteers to offer a hand with all the preparations. Organising an event like this is not an easy task and one of the things we were hoping for some help was the making of sandwiches, buns and other lovely treats for the food hall. This was a very popular stand at last year’s festival so if any lady (and not to be regarded as sexist) or gentleman is able and willing to make a pan loaf of sandwiches or make a couple dozen of buns then the club would truly like to hear from you. So please get in touch with myself on 086-1041165. Thank you.

Vintage Hay Festival

Just in case you have been away travelling to the moon for the last couple of weeks our vintage hay festival is taking place on Sunday 24th July at Dartrey sports field and like last year’s event it will feature an array of entertainment to suit everyone’s interests. Last year’s event was a fantastic day and this year’s lineup promises to be equal with an action packed itinerary of events starting with a poultry sale and car boot sale at 10am.  Later that day (12 noon, onwards) you will be able to see working horses, vintage tractors & machinery, blacksmith, live traditional music, Irish dancing, dog shows, a pet corner, sheep shearing, tossing the sheaf, penalty competitions, tug-of-war, kids races, bouncing castles, golf pitching, throw-the-wellie, archery, tractor reversing and loads more. For another great day’s entertainment make sure you keep Sunday 24th July free for a day of fun for all the family at our traditional vintage hay festival. AND REMEMBER KIDS ARE FREE.

Car Treasure Hunt

As part of our weekend of festivities all you treasure hunt fans will be delighted to hear that we are holding a car treasure hunt on Saturday 23rd July. Thomas McCormick has generously decided to set the route which will take you on some of the most interesting and scenic areas of the village and surrounding areas and will certainly test your navigation skills along with your ability to solve cryptic clues.  So you will have plenty to look forward to so get those motors revved up. The treasure hunt will start from our GAA carpark (located on the Monaghan Road, Rockcorry) at 4pm and the last car leaving will be 5.30pm. The entry fee is €20 per car, which consists of a maximum of four people, including the driver) with 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes.

Fancy Dress Football Match

Tired of watching the same old teams playing football matches? How about watching something completely differently, weird and yet so fantastic? Interested? Well, the committee has decided to organize a football match, but not any old football match; the players will be kitted out in fancy dress costumes. That’s right folks, fancy dress! The idea has received the support from the committee who are extremely excited about this latest venture and the two appointed captains, who shall remain nameless, are carefully seeking people, both male and female, to take part. This proves to be another entertaining occasion which you don’t want to miss and if you ladies would like to see a bunch of macho blokes dressed up in fancy frocks, blonde wigs or hilarious super hero characters and make a complete fool of themselves then make sure you keep free Saturday 23rd July at 8.00pm and later that night why not call up to St. Mary’s Hall for a BBQ.

Barbeque Night

If the aroma of sizzling sausages, grilled steaks and juicy beef burgers causes your taste buds to tingle then make sure you keep free Saturday 23rd July as the club is holding a barbeque in St. Mary’s Hall. I’m getting hungry just thinking about it!

Monaghan Electrical Intermediate League

They say ‘good teams bounce back from difficult situations’ and that’s exactly what our senior team did last Sunday afternoon when they bounced back from a run of bad form to record a wonderful victory over  Aughnamullen in the Monaghan Electrical intermediate league on a score-line 0-9 to 3-9. The lads were deserved winners in this clash as they signaled their intent right from the start with some excellent attacking play and not to be outdone the defenders marshaled their opponents in good style. For a full match report and to view a selection of action photographs please log onto www.rockcorrygaa.ie Our next outing in the league campaign is on Wednesday 20th July when we travel to play Drumhowan and the game has a 7.45pm throw-in time.

McGuigan Builders Intermediate Championship

This weekend our attention is on the first round qualifier clash against Drumhowan that takes place on Sunday 17th July at Aughnamullen and the game has a throw-in time of 7.30pm. When the two sides met earlier in the league campaign back in March just two points separated the sides on that occasion and this encounter will prove to be another epic battle. There is no second chance, just one bite at the cherry, so go and cheer on the lads and be that extra man. Best of luck lads.

GRM Minor Football League Division 2

After the exam break our minor team resumed their GRM minor football league campaign on Tuesday 5th July against Magheracloone and were very, very fortunate to come away with a share of the spoils as they scored an equaliser deep into injury time to leave the final score Rock Sarsfields 1-10 Magheracloone 0-13. The game, which ebbed and flowed from start to finish, was a cracking encounter with both sets of players giving their all and at the break we enjoyed a slender 1-6 to 0-8 lead. The game continued in a similar fashion during the second half with the lead changing hands on a number of occasions and when the game approached injury time it was delicately poised and it could have gone any way but Magheracloone restored the lead when they pointed on the 31st minute. With time ticking away questions were being asked about our mental strength and capability but the lads came storming back and when Mark McGuirk (who was carrying a groin injury and played through the pain barrier) collected the ball he surged forward and notched over an awesome point to draw the sides level and share the spoils. The final score-line Rock Sarsfields 1-10 Maghercloone 0-13.
