Annual Presentations (2009)

Hall of Fame

The Hall of Fame award (2009) was presented to Peter McKenna at our annual social night held in St. Mary’s Hall on Friday 26th February 2010. Peter made a rich contribution to the administration of the club for many years. He became treasurer of the club in 1979 a position he held for two years. He was joint secretary along with Jimmy Carroll in 1982 and was secretary of the club in 1983, ‘84 and ‘85. He was elected Public Relations Officer in 1988 and 1989. For a couple of years preceding the opening of Naomh Pairc Mhuire Peter devoted much of his time and energy researching matters relating to the issue of the book entitled ‘A History of Rockcorry St. Mary’s’ in “The Emetresse” which was published in 1991 when the club officially opened Naomh Pairc Mhuire. He also managed numerous underage teams and was in charge of the local school team that won the Ollie O’Rourke Cup in 1977. In 1982 he was manager of the under 10 team, otherwise known as the “The Mighty Minnows”, that won the Ballybay tournament beating Tullycorbet in the final. In 1984 he was manager of our under 13 team that captured the McGrane Cup. While not directly involved with the club nowadays he remains a friend and a keen observer in the interests of the club. His contribution towards the club will never be forgotten and the club extends their gratitude for his dedication.

Senior Player of the Year

It was no coincidence that Garry Calvert was awarded the senior player of the year for 2009. A player with enormous ability and unquestioned commitment, his performances throughout the year were both outstanding and consistent. He can adequately adapt to any position on the field but is renowned for his man marking abilities and is usually assigned the job of marking the opposition’s most dangerous forward.

Reserve Player of the Year

The reserve player of the year award went to Cathal Sheridan. Cathal made an instant impact on the full back line of our reserve team during the year. He is renowned for his strength, braveness and determination and will always leave the field of play after giving 110% effort.

Minor Player of the Year

Niall McKeown is one of our emerging young talented players and this was recognised last year when he played on the County Monaghan Minor Team. A hard worker within the side he is renowned for his sharpness and intelligent play which makes him an all round quality player and a worthy recipient of the award.

Gerry McKeown accepts the Minor Player of Year Award on behalf of his son Niall McKeown.
