Club Notes 13th December

The lights are on!

If you’re like me and really look forward to the festive season and having a good time with friends and family then surely you would agree that there’s no better time of year than the magic of Christmas and seeing a spectacular 30 foot high Christmas tree up on the village green that dazzles and looks stunning when the lights are switched on you can’t but feel the excitement in the air. All credit to the Christmas tree committee and fair-play to Philip Clarke, Anthony Clerkin, Colm McCormick, Kevin Clear, Rory Dobbin, Keelan Clerkin and Aaron Clerkin who braved the elements last Saturday morning and pulled out all the stops to ensure the tree was up for all of us to enjoy. I hope people appreciate just how much time and effort went into getting the tree up in order to enhance the village and making it look special over the Christmas season and if you have not already supported their fund raising campaign you can help by buying a bulb or alternatively make a donation towards the cause. Once again a massive well done to all the workers, the tree looks totally amazing. Merry Christmas everybody.

‘Off the Booze and On the Ball’

Ulster GAA has backed an exciting new health challenge to its members … ‘Off the Booze and On the Ball’, which was launched in Croke Park recently. This fun challenge with a healthy twist invites participants to abstain from alcohol for the month of January and in doing so seek sponsorship to go towards their local GAA club. Participants are also encouraged to engage in some new exercises that help them reach their recommended weekly activity levels during the month, and hopefully beyond. Ulster GAA President Aogán Ó Fearghail urged Ulster GAA members to get involved in the campaign. He said, “This is an excellent opportunity for our members to start the year in a healthy manner. Many of our teams begin preparing for the season ahead at this time so it’s ideal for our playing base, but we would be hopeful that the wider membership would get involved and truly make this a community effort!”. Individuals and panel members can sign up at www.gaa.ie/asap where they will receive a sponsorship card and an information pack containing details on health, exercise and diet. Further information is also available from respective County ASAP Officers. All participating clubs will be in with a chance to win a training session with one of Ireland’s leading high performance coaches or one of the country’s leading sports nutritionists in 2012.

Club Notes 6th December

Come Dine For Rock – a tasty 10 out of 10!

There was certainly a great buzz around the village last Saturday evening (3rd December) because the foodilicious event of the year our “Come Dine for Rock” night was held. This unique and simple fundraising idea was based on the hugely popular television show ‘Come Dine With Me’ and was held in various households in the parish. Budding chefs and food lovers threw on the apron to create their very own version of the TV show and raise money for the club. Whether it involved a formal four course meal, gourmet beans on toast, a tea party, a barbeque or cheating by ordering a take-away the choice was entirely up to them. If it was anything like my night I imagine the cooks were running around the kitchen like blue-arsed flies! There was chopping & scrubbing, a hell of a lot of puffing & huffing, slicing & dicing and basically all round panic but in fairness I never used the f word once! Apologies, I have a confession to make; I did use it a few times it was so much FUN, FUN and FUN. I would have been totally lost without the help of the world’s best cook, the top lady herself, the mammy and my wee niece Steph who kept a watchful eye on proceedings and made sure everything was up to her very high standards and many thanks for all their work. Let me tell you, between cooking and entertaining I was exhausted by the end of the night but I still found time to review the marks & comments and while many of my guests gave top marks some were fussy and too pernickety and awarded low marks which was very disappointing and very strange because there wasn’t much food left on the plate to feed the dogs! All hosts set amazing high standards by dazzling their guests with their culinary prowess and they certainly created some fabulous food creations. I have uploaded a couple of photographs to our website and as you can see everyone had a wonderful time and talking to people afterwards they really enjoyed the night and embraced every delicious moment and would certainly encourage people to do it again. Personally speaking, I have to say it was an awesome night with great company, great food, interesting conversations (mostly about football, football & football) and here’s looking forward to the next Come Dine for Rock and a further chance to taste some delicious food, enjoy a glass, or two of my favouite tipple in the company of friends and family. What more do you want? Once again a big thank you to all the hosts for your efforts and to all the guests for your contribution it is very much appreciated by the club and until the next time ciao.

Senior Citizen Walk

A massive well done to Eric Latimer, Ann Carroll, Andrea Coyle, Ben Duffy, Emer McGeough, Gerry Coyle and Pat McCormick who took part in the sponsored walk last Saturday afternoon for the senior citizens. The wintery conditions failed to dampen their spirits as they raised money for the senior citizen’s Christmas party which takes place this Saturday 11th December in the Hillgrove Hotel. If anyone would like to make a donation towards this event you can contact anyone of the above or any member on the Rockcorry Community Alert committee.

Christmas Tree – Table Quiz

We all like to see the village looking Christmassy over the festive season and there’s nothing nicer than seeing a well-lit Christmas tree on the village green. The Christmas tree committee is holding a table quiz tomorrow night Friday 9th December in St. Mary’s Hall at 8pm and I would appeal to everyone in the village to support this as generously as they can. Table of 4 costs €20 and refreshments will be served.
