Sympathy

On behalf of the club may I extend our deepest sympathies to the Clarke family, Clontibret, on the recent passing of Pat Clarke. Pat was involved in GAA for the best part of his life and was captain of the Monaghan team in 1956 that captured the All Ireland junior football championship trophy and he was inducted into the Monaghan GAA Hall of Fame in 1998 for his contribution towards Monaghan football.  Ar dheis De go raibh a anam

Monaghan Electrical Intermediate League

Our seniors are back in action tomorrow evening (Friday 1st July) when they play host to Sean McDermotts, in the Monaghan Electrical intermediate league campaign. The game has a throw-in time of 8pm. During the week I caught up with vice-captain of the team Gary Calvert and he urged his fellow team mates to banish the bad memories of the recent championship and league games and look ahead to the match on Friday night with a view to putting in a much improved display. He said “the lads know that they face a very difficult test against Sean McDermott’s and they will present tough opposition but we have had plenty of time to regroup and we just have to put in a decent performance”. He continued by saying “the lads have great passion and pride and have a great appetite for playing and are determined to put in a performance to get back on the winning track”. Let’s hope the lads can rekindle the fighting spirit and the quality off football we all know they are capable of producing to ensure the right result. Best of luck lads.

Club Notes 21st June

Monaghan Electrical Intermediate League

No doubt the topic of discussion among supporters this past week was the performance of our senior team last Wednesday evening when we returned pointless after the trip to play Donaghmoyne in the Monaghan Electrical intermediate league campaign. One would have thought that this encounter was the perfect opportunity for the team to restore some pride in themselves and the green jersey and produce a grittier performance after the poor display against Currin in the preliminary round of the intermediate championship, three days earlier. Unfortunately, we were treated to another uninspired, uninterested display as the team lacked the determination and confidence to make any impression on the game as we simply failed to compete and proved no match against a stronger, speedier, and a more co-ordinated Donaghmoyne team who powered their way to a comfortable 1-11 to 1-8 victory. While the final score-line only reflects a three point win for Donaghmoyne in reality the winning margin should have been a lot more because they were the better side and dominated this contest apart from the last five minutes where we had a brief flurry and managed to score 1-3 to put some respectability on the final score-line. Having watched the team being outplayed and physically brushed aside our team selector, David McGregor was finding it difficult to come to terms with the team’s performance. Speaking after the game, he said “it was very difficult to look at that to be honest. Donaghmoyne were far superior on the day and they were physically stronger in some key positions and had a greater movement off the ball. They really punished us every time they got forward and in the first half they kicked six or seven wide’s along with scoring 1-7 to our 0-4, which shows they totally dominated the game”. When asked, what was the next step? David responded, “well, the first thing we have to do is get the lads back and get them playing football the way we all know they can. We were poor tonight and the lads know this more than anyone and they should realise that we will have to work extremely hard in the coming weeks in order to improve our football ability and keep things moving forward. It was deeply disappointing and bitterly frustrating to watch the lads tonight because we all know they have plenty of talent, ability and skill and when they lose in this manner it makes it very hard to accept because we all know they are capable of producing much, much better”.  I am 100% behind you on that point David and I just hope that moving forward everyone can focus on the positives and build on these for our next game which takes place on Friday 1st July against Sean McDermotts.

Team & Scorers: Jamie Smith, Colin Reilly, Damien Matthews, Owen Fitzpatrick, Keith Daly, Niall McKeown, Stephen McGuirk 0-2, Mark Daly 0-1, Martin Carroll, Fergal McGeough 0-1, Garry Calvert 0-1, Noel Carroll, Colin Quinn, Paul McKeown and Mark McGuirk 1-1. Subs: Dwayne Rooney 0-2 for Garry Calvert, Pauric Reilly for Colin Quinn, Conor McGeough for Niall McKeown, Ryan Sharkey for Mark Daly.

Monaghan Electrical Intermediate League Fixtures

McGuigan Builders Intermediate Championship

We have been drawn against Drumhowan in the first round of the championship qualifiers. At the time of going to press the date, venue and time was unknown.

Platinum Tanks Reserve Football Championship

The old adage ‘goals win games’ was strikingly illustrated last Friday evening when Blackhill produced four goals in a seven minute blitzkrieg during the first half of our Platinum Tanks reserve football championship encounter to record a 0-12 to 4-12 victory.  Despite a good start by the lads our defence was cruelly exposed during the 12th and 19th minutes when BANG, BANG, BANG and yes you guessed it BANG we conceded four goals as Blackhill established a commanding 4-6 to 0-7 lead at the end of the first half. At this stage, it was game, set and match (excuse the Wimbledon pun!) as a contest but when play resumed the lads showed a lot of character and spirit as they worked tirelessly during the second half to try and reduce the deficit but the task was an almighty uphill battle and proved a bridge to far and Blackhill emerged victorious on a score-line 0-12 to 4-12.

Team & Scorers: Anthony Tate, Cathal Sheridan, Owen Fitzpatrick, Ryan Sharkey, Kyle Rooney, Felix Granaghan, Keelan Clerkin, Barry Patterson, Liam Connolly, John Greenan, Dwayne Rooney (0-4 play & 0-8 free-kicks) Colin Quinn, Shane Wynne, Stephen Lynch, Seamus Carroll: Subs Finbar McDermott for Anthony Tate.

Donaghmoyne 1-11 Rockcorry 1-8

Donaghmoyne Overwhelm Rock

We have all heard the statement a thousand times “winning isn’t everything, it’s the taking part that counts”, while others say “winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing” and you know what, I agree with that latter sentiment, you play sport to win. I hate the taking part attitude but right now you know I would settle for a competitive or a spirited performance from our senior team because yesterday evening (Wednesday 15th June) we proved no match (on the day) to a stronger, speedier, and a more co-ordinated Donaghmoyne team who powered their way to a comfortable 1-11 to 1-8 victory. I know what you’re thinking the score-line only reflects a three point win for Donaghmoyne but in reality the winning margin should have been a lot more because they were the better side and dominated this contest from the throw-in.

After the poor performance against Currin in the preliminary round of the intermediate championship one would have thought that this encounter was the perfect opportunity for the team to restore some pride in themselves and the green jersey and produce a grittier performance.  Unfortunately, we were treated to another uninspired, uninterested display as the team lacked the determination and confidence to make any impression on the game and basically we simply failed to compete. In fairness, we did manage to stage a mini revival during the closing period which allowed us to put some respectability on the final score-line but we never looked like winning this fixture.

There is absolutely no shame in losing a game of football provided you put in your best effort and once you have done this you can leave the field, with your head held high, knowing that you give it your best. I don’t like criticising or giving out but I know the players, I have trained and played alongside most of them and I know they have plenty of talent, ability and skill and when they lose in this manner it makes it very hard to accept because I know they are capable of producing much, much better.  I just hope that moving forward everyone, managers, trainers, selectors and players can focus on the positives and build on these for our next league encounter which takes place on Friday 1st July against Sean McDermotts.
