Club Notes 29th March

Charity Event

I suppose one of the perks being the PRO is that you can edit what appears in the club notes! This week and indeed over the next couple of weeks I will be taking the liberty to promote an upcoming charity event. I am climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest free standing mountain in the world, in October 2011 in aid of the Irish Heart Foundation and Stroke Action Ireland. This is a very worthy cause which has affected a lot of people in the country. I am holding a Race Night on Saturday 30th April in the Maple Bar, Rockcorry and would greatly appreciate your support for this event in my aim to raise funds for the Irish Heart Foundation. Race sheets are now in circulation and any individual or company interested in sponsoring a race it costs €50 and to buy a horse it costs €10. You can contact me on mobile 086-1041165 or email rockcorrygaa@live.ie, michael_carroll@live.com. Once again it is for a good cause and I look forward to hearing from you.

Intermediate Football League

We played our second game of the Intermediate league last Sunday 27th March against Drumhowan. This was a tough encounter against a strong Drumhowan side and unfortunately we had to settle for second best on the day. In a highly entertaining game there was very little between the sides but Drumhowan seemed to be more economical in front of goals and ran out eventual winners on a score-line Rockcorry 0-9 Drumhowan 0-11. Overall despite the defeat our team management will be quite happy with the spirit and attitude shown from all players. We were missing some key players, namely Keith Daly, Mark Daly, Noel Carroll, Dwayne Rooney and Anthony Tate and this was a major factor and hopefully they will be back in the green jersey fit and ready to take on Carrickmacross on Sunday 17th April. Please visit www.rockcorrygaa.ie for a selection of action photographs.

Senior Team Fixtures

The next game for the seniors is an away game against Carrickmacross on Sunday 17th April and has a throw-in time of 2.30pm. On Sunday 24th April we have a home game against Currin at 2.30pm and on Friday 29th April we travel to play Eire Og at 7.30pm.

Reserve League Division 3

Our reserve team played Emyvale last Saturday afternoon but it was the home side who secured the two league points on a score-line Emyvale 0-16 Rockcorry 3-4. This was a mixed performance from the team and only managed to notch up a single point in the first half that came from a free-kick converted by Dwayne Rooney. Half time score Emyvale 0-8 Rockcorry 0-1. After a strong pep talk at the break and a number of switches the lads started to play better and they succeeded to close the gap to a  couple of points but unfortunately time ran out and Emyvale gained the spoils. Please visit www.rockcorrygaa.ie for a selection of action photographs.

Reserve Team Fixtures

This Sunday 3rd April our reserve team travel to Threemilehouse to play Sean McDermotts and the game has an early throw-in time of 12 NOON. On Friday 8th April we have a home game against Aughnamullen at 7.00pm and on Saturday 23rd April we travel to play Killeevan at 6.00pm.

Their next game is on Tuesday 5th April when they take on Cuchulains, a Doohamlet & Toome amalgamation, at Pairc Naomh Mhuire at 6.45pm. On Tuesday 12th April they travel to play Maghercloone at 7.00pm and on Tuesday 19th April they have a home game against Killanny with a throw-in time of 7.00pm.

Under 16 Team

The amalgamated under 16 team, Rock Emmets, commence their season tonight (Thursday 31st March) when they travel to play Doohamlet at 6.30pm.

Club Notes 22nd March

It’s Official our “Rock Country” Night – Rocks!!!

Right folks, I have never swam with sharks. I have never walked the Great Wall of China and I have never visited the Grand Canyon! But now I can say this with 100% confidence: I have gone to a ‘Rock Country’ concert and OMG, it was outstanding.  There are good nights and there are great nights and then there are nights like last Friday (18th March) which was quite simply outstanding. Okay, I know what you’re thinking I said that already, but who cares and just to make sure you get my drift, I’ll say it again, it was OUTSTANDING. This was a night that will not be beaten and will rank up there among the best darn nights ever held in St. Mary’s Hall. The music extravaganza that the audience was treated to was stunning. The hall was packed to the rafters with Country & Western music lovers who were deeply appreciative of the efforts by all performers. We have all heard the songs before a thousand times but the way they performed them certainly set pulses racing and sent a shiver down the spine for their resemblance to the original song. Sean McCaffrey was our Master of Ceremonies and he kept the crowd laughing and eased the nerves of the performers (though in my opinion all the singers looked completely at home, as if performing on stage was something they did every day of the week!!!). First up on stage was Annette Hillis and she got the evening off to a great start with her performance of ‘What I Got in Mind’. Next to hit the stage was Nuala Boylan and she gave us a smooth rendition of ’Blanket on the Ground’. Ollie McQuillan gave us his version of a ‘Coat of Many Colours’ with Patricia Treanor treating us to a ‘Country Medley’. Next up on stage was Hughie Carroll who sang his favourite song ‘Home on the Range’ and Elaine Tate thrilled us with her style of Dolly Parton’s ‘Nine to Five’. Kelly Crowe then gave her delivery of ‘One Day at a Time’ and Philip Clarke belted out a timeless Don Gibson song entitled ‘A Legend in My Time’. One of the most colourful characters of the night was Irene McCormick who brought the roof down with her performance of ‘Raw Hide’ while Fionnuala McQuillan sang a Tammy Wynette classic ‘Stand by Your Man’. Robert Brown and his son Warren concluded the show with their version of ‘In the Year of Thirty-Nine’. It was a resounding success and well done to the main event organiser Ollie McQuillan for bringing together such a talented group of singers and many thanks to our musical director Robert Brown who was instrumental in his leadership for producing the various backing tracks and advice for all performers. Don’t forget you can buy a copy of the CD entitled “The Definitive Rock Country Collection 2011” for €10. Log onto www.rockcorrygaa.ie to hear clips of the CD and I guarantee you will not be disappointed. If you are interested in obtaining a copy please contact any of the singers or send an email to rockcorrygaa@live.ie or send a text message to 086-1041165 with your details and we will send a copy to you as soon as possible.

Intermediate Football League

Our senior team got their Intermediate Football League off to a good start when they overcame a very determined Aughnamullen side last Saturday (19th March) by the narrowest of margins. The game was played in perfect conditions and the two sides served up a very open game of football and at the break we lead by 1-6 to 0-3. On the restart we extended our advantage to open up a 0-9 point gap. At this stage we appeared to be in complete control of the game however Aughnamullen upped their performance and began to stamp their authority and succeeded to narrow the deficit back to a couple of points. Thankfully, the lads showed good composure to hold out and come away with the spoils on a score-line Rockcorry 1-10 Aughnamullen 0-12. Please visit www.rockcorrygaa.ie for a selection of action shots plus highlights of the game.

Under 14 Team

Our under 14 team played Tyholland last Saturday morning and while the team displayed some fine passages of football particularly in the third and fourth quarters it was Tyholland’s ability to convert possession onto the scoreboard during the first two quarters that proved the crucial difference and after playing their hearts out they lost on a score-line Rockcorry 1-4. Tyholland Next up is an game this Saturday 26th March when they travel to play Killeevan at 12 noon. Please check www.rockcorrygaa.ie for all other fixtures concerning our underage teams.
