Club Notes 20th April 2010

Senior Team

We played our first game of the Intermediate League on Wednesday 14th April against Donaghmoyne. This was a tough game to start the season against a strong Donaghmoyne side and unfortunately we had to settle for second best on the day losing by 0-4 points. Rockcorry 0-11 Donaghmoyne 0-15. Sunday evening last we played Doohamlet and once again the team produced a spirited performance but it was not enough as Doohamlet ran out eventual winners on a score-line 0-9 to 0-7. Nevertheless we can take some positives from these first two outing and we can look forward to better days to come. Please log onto www.rockcorrygaa.ie for full match reports. This Sunday 25th April we travel to Pairc Emmett to play Aghabog with a 7.00pm throw-in.

Under 16 Team

Our under 16 team were beaten by a stronger Tyholland side in Pairc Mhuire last Thursday night. The lads displayed tremendous conviction and spirit over the course of this entertaining game but unfortunately, Tyholland had enough stored away in reserve and finished out the game the strongest to secure victory on a score-line Rockcory 2-8 Tyholland 4-8. The next game for our under 16 team is an away game tonight (Thursday 22nd April) against Emerald Sarsfields at 7.00pm.

Minor Fixtures

Our minor footballers under the management of Pascal Smyth, Jimmy McGeough and Mark McCormick made a good start to the season when they put in a fine performance in their Division 3 league encounter against Tyholland. Tyholland dominated the opening exchanges as they scored two goals and a number of points to open up an early lead. However, as the half unfolded we gradually found our kicking boots and finished the half the strongest to go in at the break leading 2-7 to 2-3. The second half was tit-for-tat but when Tyholland piled on the pressure, the team showed great character and Aaron Clerkin came to the rescue when making a number of point blank saves to deny Tyholland probable match winning scores and the team were able to hold on for the win on a score-line Rockcorry 3-12 Tyholland 2-12. They played Emyvale last Tuesday (20th April), please check club notes next week for match report. Their next game is against Na Mullai Sarsfields in Killeevan on Tuesday 27th April at 7.15pm.

Rockcorry 0-11 Donaghmoyne 0-15

Streamline Coaches Intermediate Football League, Round 1 – Wednesday 14th April 2010

“Rockcorry Rue Missed Chances”

Team: Jamie Smith, Colin Reilly, Damien Matthews, Garry Calvert, Keith Daly, Johnny Reilly, Stephen McGuirk, Martin Carroll, Liam Connolly, Niall McKeown, Dwayne Rooney, Noel Carroll, Paul McKeown, Colin Quinn and Mark McGuirk.

Subs: Conor McGeough for Noel Carroll (injured), Pauric Reilly for Stephen McGuirk (injured)

We played our first game of the Intermediate League on Wednesday 14th April against Donaghmoyne. This was a tough game to start the season against a strong Donaghmoyne side and unfortunately we had to settle for second best on the day losing by 0-4 points. Nevertheless we can take some positives from this first outing and we can look forward to better days to come.

In his post-match analysis team trainer David McGregor highlighted the failure to convert any of “four or five good chances” to put us out of reach. “With ten minutes gone in the second half we were in the driving seat leading by four points and had any of those chances gone over the bar, mentally, it would off been a real blow to them. Look, that’s football, we have to regroup, eliminate the mistakes and be ready for the next one”.

The game itself was played in glorious weather conditions at Pairc Mhuire and we opened the scoring in the first minute when Liam Connolly collected a pass from Paul McKeown and tapped over a neat point. We extended our lead moments later when Paul McKeown was fouled, going down on the ball, and Stephen McGuirk sent the free kick over the bar. Donaghmoyne responded immediately when they were awarded a free kick after Garry Calvert was deemed to touch the ball on the ground and they equalized shortly after with a fine point from play. Niall McKeown raised the white flag in the 5th minute after good defensive play by the forwards prevented the Donaghmoyne defenders from getting out easy and Dwayne Rooney increased our lead when he curled over a wonderful point from play. We hit our first wide in the 10th minute after Paul McKeown’s fisted attempt went wide via the upright.

Paul McKeown makes a determined run goalward with a Donaghmoyne defender in close attendance

Niall McKeown fouled his opponent approximately 30m from goal in the 13th minute and the Donaghmoyne free taker made no mistake sending the ball between the posts. They could off been level a minute later when a shot came back off the upright and an alert Keith Daly was on hand to collect the ball and clear the danger. In the 18th minute the energetic Paul McKeown increased our lead with a splendid point after soloing goal bound. Conor McGeough was introduced to the game in the 20th minute when Noel Carroll unfortunately, had to retire from the game with a suspected hamstring injury.  The referee awarded a dubious sideline ball against Paul McKeown in the 22nd minute, when the ball was clearly not out of play, and Donaghmoyne took full advantage and closed the gap to a single point.

Garry Calvert is on hand to halt the Donaghmoyne attack

We wasted two good chances through hasty shooting, between the 22nd and 24th minute, one from the boot of Martin Carroll and the second from Paul McKeown. From the kick out Mark McGuirk won the breaking ball and was fouled in the process and Dwayne Rooney sent a long high ball into the Donaghmoyne goalmouth that was initially collected by their goal keeper but he lost possession and a sudden shot by Paul McKeown went just wide. In the 25th minute, Liam Connolly intercepted a pass on the 30m line and effortlessly and accurately fired over a glorious point to increase our lead to two points.  The referee Kieran Mulligan did not make too many friends in the 26th minute when he awarded a point to Donaghmoyne, which in a lot of people’s opinion the ball was while wide! Stephen McGuirk rounded off the first half scoring when he tapped over a free kick from the left wing to leave the half time score Rockcorry 0-7 Donaghmoyne 0-5.

On the resumption of play Donaghmoyne opened the scoring with a point within twenty seconds of the throw-in. Paul McKeown restored our two point lead with a neat point from play after a swift passing movement between Mark McGuirk and Niall McKeown. Moments later Donaghmoyne were awarded a free in when Damien Matthews was deemed to foul his counterpart, and they tapped over a simple free kick.  Between the 5th and 10th minute we took control of the game and rattled off three unanswered points. The first coming from a Dwayne Rooney free kick after Paul McKeown was fouled. The second came moments later as Keith Daly, went airbourne to field a high ball from the kick-out and he sent a measured pass into Mark McGuirk who was brought down approximately 25m from goals and Dwayne Rooney was on hand to send the ball between the uprights.

Keith Daly goes airbourne to field the high ball ahead of the Donaghmoyne midfielder

Two wides followed, one from Dwayne Rooney and the other from Paul McKeown, before Keith Daly came forward in the 10th minute to fire over a beautiful point after a superb build up from Paul and Niall McKeown to open up a four point lead 0-11 to 0-7.

Donaghmoyne closed the gap in the 11th minute when they tapped over a 21m free kick and at this stage we suffered a further setback when Stephen McGuirk had to retire from the game with a suspected rib injury. Donaghmoyne continued to close the deficit in the 13th minute when they scored a point from play. Johnny Reilly was fouled, in the 16th minute, approximately 40m from goals and Dwayne Rooney’s attempt at the posts drifted just wide. From the kick out Donaghmoyne seized possession and after good approach play they slotted over a point to leave just a solitary point separating the teams.

Mark McGuirk on the ball as he attempts to evade the challenge of a Donaghmoyne defender.

During the following three minutes we squandered a number of good chances. The first a shot from Conor McGeough, the second a Dwayne Rooney free kick also going wide and finally a Mark McGuirk free kick landed short and into the hands of the goalie. At this stage, Donaghmoyne started to lord possession around midfield as their greater physique regularly saw them emerge with the breaking ball and they drew level in the 22nd minute when they tapped over a simple free kick from the 13m line and they took the lead shortly after with a fine point from play. For the remaining five minutes Donaghmoyne firmly put the foot to the pedal and knocked over three additional points to leave the final score Rockcorry 0-11 Donaghmoyne 0-15.

On reflection, we were guilty of some poor finishing and had one of a few kicks been converted midway through the second half, the result may have been different! The lads showed great determination and real character throughout the game. Naturally, losing Noel Carroll and Stephen McGuirk were major setbacks and we hope they will be back in the green jersey as soon as possible.

GAA Oral History Project

Every club has its own unique stories, personalities and experiences. The GAA Oral History Project aims to make sure that the club’s history is recorded so that future generations will know the contribution that the club and individual members in the locality have made to the GAA.

Take this opportunity to be involved in the largest sport’s history project in the world today and to have your story preserved in a new archive at the GAA Museum in Croke Park.

The GAA Oral History Project aims to record the fullest possible picture of what the GAA has meant to the Irish people, in their own words. The project will record face-to-face interviews with thousands of people in Ireland and internationally, including GAA members and supporters, current and former players, managers, officials and administrators, jersey washers, stewards, drivers – anyone who has ever had any involvement with the GAA.

This is not just a story about the famous players and famous matches, but about the grassroots who are responsible for keeping the Association alive. This project aims to be a representative survey of attitudes to and experiences of the GAA among Irish people – be they good or bad.

This project will capture accounts, not only of matches and teams, but also the social life around the GAA – where people stop to have a picnic on the way to or from a match, how people travel to matches, the types of homecoming celebrations and commiserations that take place and the fundraising and social events that are organised. We are also hoping to collect records and minute books from counties and clubs, posters, letters, songs, poems and even prayers relating to the GAA. We want to record the experiences of people involved in all types of Gaelic games, not just football and hurling, therefore we are encouraging people from handball, rounders, camogie and ladies football to get involved. This project will celebrate the grassroots of the organisation by recording and preserving their efforts and achievements over the last 125 years.

How YOU can get involved:

Visit the website www.bc.edu/centers/irish/gaahistory/   and enjoy stories already recorded and learn more about the project.

Become a volunteer – Tell us your storey – Without your help, the story of the club and county will not be told.

Donate photographs, documents and recordings.

If you would like to take part please give me a ring or contact any committee member.

Castleblayney 1-5 Rockcorry 0-13

Monaghan Electrical Reserve Football League Division 4, Round 3 – 7th April 2010

“McGuirk Stars to Secure Win for Rock”.

Team: Jamie Smith, Cathal Sheridan, Rory Carroll, Pauric Reilly, Shane Wynne, Colin Reilly, Ryan Sharkey,  Martin Carroll, Liam Connolly, Keelan Clerkin, Colin Quinn 0-5, Anthony Tate, Declan McCullagh, Mark McGuirk 0-8 and Conor McGeough.

Subs: Josh Butler for Anthony Tate (injured) and Andrew Carroll for Declan McCullagh.

On Wednesday 7th April we travelled to St. Mary’s Park, to play Castleblayney in the third round of the Reserve league and we had five points to spare as we recorded our first league win of the competition. Played in perfect weather conditions in front of a dozen supporters, mainly Rock, Castleblayney attacked first and had a goal opportunity within the first two minutes but their shot went just wide. Moments later they opened their account with a fine point from play in the 3rd minute. As the game progressed our forwards were trying hard but unfortunately the shooting wasn’t that accurate with shots from Keelan Clerkin, Conor McGeough and Coiln Quinn all drifting wide. It wasn’t until the 10th minute when Mark McGuirk collected the ball from Keelan Clerkin and he was brought down and he sent the resulting free kick over the bar to register our first score.

Anthony Tate sets up another attack during the league clash against Castleblayney

In the 17th minute Colin Quinn showed great composure to slot over a fine point after good attacking play by the team. Castleblayney produced another goal opportunity in the 18th minute, as our defence were caught napping but thankfully a terrific one-handed safe from Jamie Smith deflected the ball past the post for a ‘45’.

From the resulting ‘45’ the ball was collected by our defence and with a sweeping move down the field Keelan Clerkin sent a long guided pass to Mark McGuirk who sent the ball straight between the uprights. He repeated his scoring fete four minutes later when Anthony Tate collected a direct pass from Colin Quinn who off-loaded to Mark McGuirk and he made no mistake putting the bar over the bar to open up a 0-3 point lead.

Mark McGuirk collects a pass from Keelan Clerkin

Castleblayney hit back in the 26th minute when they were awarded a free kick on the edge of the square when Colin Reilly committed a foul and they slotted the free over the bar. Two minutes later we were guilty again of some poor defending and Castleblayney took full advantage and tapped over a simple point from close range to reduce the deficit to a single point. We responded immediately when Mark McGuirk displayed some individual brilliance with a glorious strike after a measured pass in by Martin Carroll. Castleblayney were denied a goal opportunity in the 29th minute when their attempt was stopped on the line by centre half back Colin Reilly who was in the right place at the right time. Colin Quinn completed the scoring in the 31st minute when he collected a pass from Martin Carroll and fired the ball over the ball to leave the half time score Castleblayney 0-3 Rockcorry 0-6.

Martin Carroll puts the Castleblayney player under pressure during the league clash

We started the second half well but two opening attempts one from Martin Carroll in the 2nd minute and the other from Anthony Tate in the 5th minute drifted wide. It took all of eight minutes before Keelan Clerkin found Mark McGuirk available who split the posts with a fine effort after good attacking play from Colin Reilly and Keelan Clerkin. Trailing by 0-4 points Castleblayney looked determined to get back into contention and in the 12th minute they slotted over a fine point from play. Our defensive lines were finally breached in the 16th minute when a cross-field pass found a player lurking on the edge of the square and he flicked the ball to the net to draw the team’s level 1-4 to 0-7.

The momentum was certainly with the home side but our lads never gave up as there is great team spirit and they wasted little time in getting back on track and scored three unanswered points in quick succession. The first, a fine strike from Mark McGuirk in the 18th minute and he showed his qualities shortly after with another fine effort.  Mark was in the thick of the action again when he collected a long pass from Keelan Clerkin and he was pulled down on the 21m line and Colin Quinn tapped over the free kick to open up a 0-3 point lead. In the 22nd minute another long ball was sent in by Liam Connolly who found Mark McGuirk and he ran towards the goal “soccer style” and his shot was saved by the Castleblayney goal-keeper and the rebound attempt by Andrew Carroll went just wide.

Colin Reilly solo's out of defence and sets up another attack.

Castleblayney closed the deficit in the 23rd minute with a point from a free kick and possibly should off gone ahead moments later but thankfully their shot at goals was just wide of the post.

Colin Quinn restored our 0-3 point lead in the 25th minute with a fine individual score and he increased our lead shortly after when he put another one over the bar from a free kick after Andrew Carroll prevented the Castleblayney defenders from getting out easy!

With time ticking away Castleblayney needed one last throw of the dice and lobbed a long high ball into our goal mouth but Jamie Smith was up for the task and done very well to punch the ball away from the danger zone.  Entering injury time Mark McGuirk grabbed our final score of the game, when he curled over an excellent point from play, to secure a fine victory for the team and deservedly earn himself the man of the match performance as he contributed eight points in all with seven coming from play. The final score Castleblayney 1-5 Rockcorry 0-13.

VHI GAA CUL CAMPS

CHILDREN IN MONAGHAN CAN REGISTER FOR VHI GAA CÚL CAMPS NOW! AND WIN A CHANCE TO PLAY IN CROKE PARK WITH THEIR HEREOS

OVER 83,000 CHILDREN TO TAKE PART IN VHI GAA CÚL CAMPS THIS SUMMER

 - SPORTING LEGENDS LAUNCH VHI GAA CÚL CAMPS 2010

- 83,000 CHILDREN TO COMPETE FOR CHANCE TO PLAY IN CROKE PARK AT VHI CÚL DAY OUT

The 2010 Vhi GAA Cúl Camps were officially launched in Croke Park by Uachtarán Criostóir Ó Cuana and Jimmy Tolan, Chief Executive, Vhi Healthcare.

Also on hand to mark the launch of the fifth annual Vhi GAA Cúl Camps were Anthony Daly current Dublin Hurling Manager and former captain of Clare senior inter-county hurling team, and Kieran McGeeney , Kildare County Football  Manager and former captain of Armagh senior inter-county football team . These GAA legends will serve as ambassadors throughout the summer, visiting camps and will also train the lucky children that win a place at the Vhi Cúl Day Out in September.

Now in its fifth year, the Vhi GAA Cúl Camps is a nationally co-ordinated programme which aims to encourage primary school children between the ages of 7 and 13, not only to learn and develop sporting skills irrespective of their skill level or ability but also to develop a keen sense of fair-play and personal achievement by participating in Gaelic Games, in a fun, non-competitive environment. The individual camps are managed by experienced coaches who have devised a specific programme to ensure the participating children not only learn skills but also to place an emphasis on fun and team-building activity.

Introduced last year and considered a huge success by all involved, the Vhi Cúl Day Out will take place for the second time in September 2010. It is a unique opportunity for approximately 300 lucky children to win a competition and enjoy the experience of a lifetime, training with their GAA heroes and playing a game in Croke Park in front of friends and family, where they will experience the buzz and excitement of GAA’s favourite stadium.

Jimmy Tolan, Chief Executive, Vhi Healthcare commented; “The Vhi GAA Cúl Camps have gone from strength to strength and continue to grow each year. Vhi Healthcare’s involvement in this initiative demonstrates its commitment to the promotion of healthy living at community level ensuring that children live healthy and active lives.

“We were thrilled with the success of the Vhi Cúl Day Out which was a high point of last year’s event. The children involved were mesmerised by the experience which enabled them to train with their heroes and play a game in the world-famous stadium.

“We will continue to work with the GAA to ensure the Vhi GAA Cúl Camps maintain their excellent standards and are challenging and fun for all involved.”

Speaking at the launch, GAA President, Criostóir Ó Cuana, said, “The VHI GAA Cúl Camp initiative is an excellent activity where young people can develop an interest in the GAA, local clubs and sport in general. The key to successful GAA is participation and it’s wonderful to see such enthusiasm from the children and coaches involved. Role models are an important part of the Camps and the ambassadors do a great job encouraging and supporting the children throughout the summer.

“We at the GAA are hugely committed to the continued development  of the Vhi GAA Cúl Camps and we will continue to encourage children to get involved in the fun over the summer months.”

The 2010 Vhi GAA Cúl Camps are expected to be extremely popular with huge demand already coming through and parents are advised to book early to ensure they get a place at the camp of their choice.

Online booking now open at www.gaa.ie or www.vhiculcamps.gaa.ie.
