Monaghan Electrical Reserve Football League Division 4, Round 4 – 26th April 2010
Team: Gerard O’Brien, Cathal Sheridan, Rory Carroll, Pauric Reilly 0-1, Shane Wynne, Colin Reilly, Ryan Sharkey, Martin Carroll 0-2, Liam Connolly 0-3, Jamie Smith 0-4, Colin Quinn 0-1, Anthony Tate 0-2, John Greenan 0-1, Declan McCullagh 0-1 and Conor McGeough.
We played Sean McDermotts in the reserve league competition on Monday 26th April. Played in good conditions we opened the scoring in the first minute when Colin Quinn notched over a fine point from play. Shortly afterwards Jamie Smith elected to go for a goal but his shot at the target went wide. A couple of minutes later Colin Quinn had a goal opportunity but his effort also drifted wide.
When Sean McDermott’s made their first attack in the fifth minute they were awarded a free kick but their strike at the posts went narrowly wide. John Greenan had an opportunity to double our lead but his attempt at the uprights was slightly wide.
In the ninth minute, Sean McDermott’s drew level, after Cathal Sheridan was deemed to foul his opponent on the twenty-one metre line and the Sean’s free taker made no mistake and slotted the ball over the bar. We responded immediately but Colin Quinn’s effort was blocked for a forty-five but unfortunately it led to nothing. Sean McDermott’s took the lead in the 12th minute when the notched over a neat point from play.
Martin Carroll hit a terrific point from play in the 15th minute to draw the sides level and in the 16th, 19th and 24th minutes we missed some very easy scoring chances. On the other hand, Sean McDermott’s made the most of their shooting opportunities and went ahead in the 17th minute and extended their lead in the 28th minute with another point to open up a two point lead. Martin Carroll closed the deficit back to single point when he scored another excellent point from play and Jamie Smith had a chance to draw the sides level but his free kick at the end of the first half went wide to leave the score at the break Rockcorry 0-3 Sean McDermott’s 0-4.
During the first half, our play had a familiar pattern with wave after wave of attacks, but poor shooting resulted in eight wides and numerous attempts (I lost count!) landing short into the goalie’s hands. Whatever team management said to them during the interval it certainly made an impact as we saw a much improved performance from the lads as they produced some wonderful football.
On the restart, Anthony Tate opened the scoring when he completed an excellent move with a fisted point within one minute to draw the sides level. We took the lead shortly afterwards when Liam Connolly scored a wonderful long range point. However, Sean McDermott’s responded immediately with a neat score from play to make it all square again. Pauric Reilly came forward in the fourth minute and slotted over an excellent point from the right wing but a minute later, Sean McDermott’s replied and kicked over a fine point to make it 0-6 apiece.
We hit further wides in the 7th and 8th minutes from Colin Quinn and Liam Connolly. However, Liam made amends for his earlier miss with another fine strike in the 10th minute to put us one point up. The next five minutes we hit a purple patch with six unanswered points. The first coming from Declan McCullagh when he completed a move that started from the other end of the field and included Gerard O’Brien, Martin Carroll and Liam Connolly.
John Greenan increased our lead when he tapped over a point in the 13th minute. Jamie Smith extended our advantage with a pointed free in the 14th minute and a point from play shortly afterwards. Liam Connolly registered his third point in the 17th minute with another fine long range effort. In the 18th minute Shane Wynne was fouled and Jamie Smith curled over the free kick to open up a seven point lead 0-13 to 0-6. Sean McDermott’s closed the gap in the 21st minute when they pointed a free kick. We restored our seven point lead in the 23rd minute, when Anthony Tate sailed over a brilliant point from thirty metres. Sean McDermott’s notched over their final point in the 24th minute and they were unfortunate a couple of minutes later when their strike at goals hit the crossbar, but our keeper maintains he had it covered! Jamie Smith completed the scoring in the 28th minute with a neat finish to secure victory on a score-line Rockcorry 0-15 Sean McDermott’s 0-8.

Impressive Rock Claim Win Over Aghabog.
Team: Jamie Smith, Colin Reilly, Damien Matthews, Garry Calvert, Stephen McGuirk 0-4, Johnny Reilly, Keith Daly, Mark Daly 0-6, Liam Connolly, Noel Carroll 1-1, Martin Carroll, Dwayne Rooney 0-1, Paul McKeown 0-2, Mark McGuirk 0-1, and Conor McGeough.
Subs: Anthony Tate for Conor McGeough
We travelled to Paric Emmet on Sunday 25th April to play Aghabog. Played in slippery conditions, Mark Daly gave us the lead, in the first minute, when he elected for a return pass from a forty-five and he sailed over a fine point. From the ensuing kick out, Paul McKeown won the breaking ball and off-loaded to Stephen McGuirk, who took a few tough tackles, but he was able to setup his younger brother Mark who was fouled and Mark Daly was on hand to convert the free kick.
In the sixth minute, Dwayne Rooney kicked a mighty point from the left wing to extend our lead. Aghabog responded in true fashion and notched over a fine point from play a minute later. Mark Daly restored our three point advantage when he curled over a lovely point after good play from Conor McGeough and Dwayne Rooney. In the ninth minute, Mark Daly fouled his opponent on the forty-five metre line, however, the free kick landed short and was broken down but an Aghabog forward was quickest to react and he fired over a point to leave the score 0-2 to 0-4. Aghabog closed the deficit to a single point, in the twelfth minute, when they launched a long ball into our defence and Colin Reilly was deemed to push his opponent in the back to give them a simple free taking chance, which they duly availed off. Stephen McGuirk increased our lead from a free kick after Dwayne Rooney was fouled on the thirteen metre line. A couple of minutes later, Mark McGuirk raised the white flag with a terrific point from play after he collected a pass from his older brother Stephen to open up a three point lead. However, that score was cancelled out within thirty seconds as Aghabog attacked and notched over a fine point from play to close the gap.
The crucial breakthrough came in the 19th minute, when Noel Carroll completed arguably the best move of the game. Paul McKeown directed a measured pass into Dwayne Rooney and he burst through a couple of tackles and he off-loaded the ball to Noel Carroll who collected superbly and sent an unstoppable kick to the net to give us a thoroughly deserved 0-4 to 1-6 lead. In the 21st minute, play was stopped to allow an Aghabog player receive treatment. When play resumed Paul McKeown made a terrific solo run down the right wing, evaded two defenders, and sent a brilliant point over the bar to open up a six point lead. With a couple of minutes remaining in the first half Dwayne Rooney fouled Garry McBride on the twenty-one metre line and the Aghabog free-taker made no mistake to narrow the gap. A Martin Carroll shot at the posts, in injury time, drifted wide and we went into the break with a comfortable 0-5 to 1-7 cushion.
Trailing by five points Aghabog looked determined to get back into contention and within forty seconds off the restart, they were awarded a free kick after Mark Daly fouled his opponent and they tapped over a simple free kick. The kick-out was fielded by Noel Carroll who directed a lovely pass into Dwayne Rooney but his effort at the uprights landed short and into the hands off the Aghabog keeper. However, our forwards were determined to win possession back and put severe pressure on the Aghabog defenders and when Martin Carroll intercepted a pass, he burst through the Aghabog defence, shipped a few heavy tackles and found his younger brother Noel who fired the ball over the bar.
Mark Daly, stretched our lead, in the 3rd minute, when he weaved his way through the Aghabog defence to slot over a neat point after great defending by Keith Daly, Damien Matthews and Noel Carroll. We were guilty of losing possession during the next passage of play. Luckily the first shot drifted wide, but in the ninth minute Aghabog took advantage of another bad pass in our defence and they notched over a fine point. They hit another wide in the tenth minute but when Jamie Smith uncharacteristically hit a poor kick-out, Stephen McGuirk done extremely well to claim possession but appeared to be fouled in the process, after a sliding tackle, and Aghabog won the ball back and scored to close the deficit to four points 0-8 to 1-9. Anthony Tate was introduced for Conor McGeough in the 12th minute and when Mark McGuirk was awarded a free kick along the sideline it was brought in by the referee for dissent and Mark Daly calmly slotted over the free-kick to open up a five point margin. Martin Carroll won the kick-out but he was not able to hold on to possession and when Johnny Reilly fouled his opponent on the left wing approximately twenty metres from goals Aghabog curled over a fine point.
We restored our five point lead in the 17th minute when Paul McKeown displayed some off his individual brilliance. He collected a pass from Anthony Tate, turned his man, soloed past another defender before firing over a powerful point from the right wing. Aghabog missed opportunities in the 18th and 19th minutes but they remained a constant threat and our defence had to stay vigilant and when they launched a long high ball into our goal mouth Garry Calvert was up for the task as he raised the highest to punch the ball clear from the danger zone.
A couple of minutes later Stephen McGuirk kicked over another excellent point, that completed a great move down the field which included Johnny Reilly, Anthony Tate and Mark Daly. In the 24th minute, Aghabog launched another high ball into our goal mouth and luckily we were awarded a free out for a square ball. One minute later, Dwayne Rooney was fouled approximately twenty-five metres from goals, after receiving a perfect pass from Martin Carroll and Mark Daly again demonstrated his superb free taking ability when he slotted over the free kick. Mark Daly made it 0-9 to 1-14 in the 27th minute when he sailed the ball right between the posts after a swift build up involving a number of players. We lost possession in the 28th minute and Aghabog scored a point and they scored another shortly afterwards when their initial shot hit the post and the rebound was collected by an Aghabog player who fired the ball over the bar. We were awarded a late free in the 30th minute after a powerful solo run by Martin Carroll and Stephen McGuirk converted the free-kick to secure victory on a score-line Aghabog 0-11 Rockcorry 1-15 in what was at times a thrilling, sporting and very enjoyable game of football.
Pairc Emmet is never an easy place to get a result in and our team management will be pleased with the efforts shown during the match and the two league points. With games coming thick and fast, victories over Eire Og and Aghabog should give our lads the confidence to collect more league points in this competitive league. Keep up the good work lads!

We picked up our first league points on Wednesday 21st April with a one point victory over Eire Og. The game was evenly matched, from start to finish, where every ball was contested with great energy and determination. There was never more than a kick of the ball between the sides at any one stage and all players gave it their all, and quite frankly they had to as Eire Og through everything at us. Thankfully the lads battled away and won on a score-line Rockcorry 0-11 Eire Og 0-10. Last Sunday evening we picked up two more valuable points with an impressive performance against our neighbours Aghabog and won on a score-line Aghabog 0-11 Rockcorry 1-15. Monaghan Electric Reserve Football League Division 4
Our reserve team played Sean McDermott’s last Monday evening and for long periods during the first half we practically played all the football. However, we failed to convert possession onto the scoreboard as we kicked eight wides and many more efforts (I lost count!) landed short into the goalies hands and as a result Sean McDermott’s took a one point lead going in at the break 0-3 to 0-4. Whatever team management said at half time certainly made an immediate difference as we saw a much improved performance with the lads producing some wonderful football and we finished the game the strongest and won on a score-line Rockcorry 0-15 Sean McDermott’s 0-8. The next game for our reserve team is on Friday 7th May when we travel to Pairc Emmett to play Aghabog at 7.30pm.

Rock’s Late Rally Secures Win
Team: Jamie Smith, Colin Reilly, Damien Matthews, Garry Calvert, Stephen McGuirk, Keith Daly, Johnny Reilly, Martin Carroll, Liam Connolly, Colin Quinn, Mark Daly, Paul McKeown, Mark McGuirk, Dwayne Rooney and Noel Carroll
Subs: Anthony Tate for Colin Quinn.
Games against Eire Og over the years have never been easy and this encounter played on Wednesday 21st April proved no different. While the standard off football on offer was not the greatest the game provided plenty of excitement and went down to the preverbal wire. Speaking to club chairman Jimmy McGeough after the game he stated “…it was a good grafted win, even though the football wasn’t a spectacle, a win is still a win”.
Played in Pairc Mhuire, we opened the scoring in the first minute when Stephen McGuirk curled over a free kick after an Eire Og player was blew for lifting the ball. Eire Og pulled the sides level a minute later after a long delivery caught our defence out and what may have been a goal opportunity the Eire Og attacker fired the ball over the bar. Noel Carroll raised the white flag in the fourth minute with a neat point after a swift build-up involving Martin Carroll, Liam Connolly, Dwayne Rooney and Stephen McGuirk. However, no sooner had we registered the point Eire Og were applying pressure and scored their second point from play.
A couple of minutes later Stephen McGuirk hit his second of the game from a free kick after his younger brother Mark was fouled on the right wing. Eire Og had chances in the 9th and 10th minute but failed to add to their tally when their shots drifted wide. Noel Carroll extended our lead in the 11th minute when his shot, from a very acute angle, somehow managed to go between the uprights. Eire Og kicked further wides in the 12th, 13th and 15th minute before they eventually closed the gap with a fine point from play. In the 19th minute we were guilty of giving away possession and the initial shot from Eire Og was superbly blocked by Liam Connolly, however an Eire Og attacker collected the breaking ball and was fouled in the process and they slotted the free kick over to draw the sides level with 0-4 apiece.
In the 21st minute, Johnny Reilly was blew for over carrying the ball on the forty-five metre line and the Eire Og free taker decided to strike the ball off the ground and it went well wide. Noel Carroll won the kick-out and found Dwayne Rooney with a measured pass but unfortunately his attempt at the posts drifted wide. Good defensive work by Damien Matthews, in the 27th minute, put the Eire Og attacker under immense pressure and his shot at the uprights went wide. Mark McGuirk restored our lead in the 30th minute with a terrific point, after receiving the ball from Noel Carroll who broke down an Eire Og passing movement, to give us a one point cushion going in at the break with the score Rockcorry 0-5 Eire Og 0-4.
A good start is, as they say, half the work and we certainly achieved that on the resumption of play as midfielder Mark Daly won the throw-up and with a quick burst of pace left his opponents in their wake and he coolly placed his shot over the bar. A shot from Paul McKeown went wide in the 2nd minute, but he did make amends shortly afterwards when he broke loose from his marker and curled over a fine point from the left wing to open up a three point gap.
At this stage we appeared to be in control of the game, but Eire Og had other ideas and scored three unanswered points to draw the sides all square. Their first score came in the 5th minute after we lost possession in our defence and we were guilty of losing possession again for their second point. They equalised in the 12th minute after Damien Matthews fouled his opponent with a push in the back. In the 13th minute, Eire Og launched a long high ball into our goal-mouth which was fielded majestically by our keeper Jamie Smith, under severe pressure from two Eire Og forwards, and managed to clear his line. Two minutes later Johnny Reilly made a crucial block to deny Eire Og a possible scoring opportunity.
Liam Connolly won a free kick in the 17th minute after his good work paid off by preventing the Eire Og defenders getting out easy and Mark Daly from the forty-five metre line sailed the ball over the bar. Eire Og remained in touch and scored from play, in the 19th minute, after they won a throw-up on our thirteen metre line. Moments later they got their heads in front for the first time of the game after Colin Reilly fouled his opponent on the twenty-one metre line.
A big talking point on the line was, were we going to throw another game away? With a single point separating the sides we needed to produce a big five minutes. Anthony Tate was introduced to the game in the 25th minute when he came on for Colin Quinn and he soon made an impact when he received the ball and directed a lovely pass to Dwayne Rooney who was fouled in the process and Mark Daly converted the free kick to level the sides on 0-9 apiece.
Moments later Dwayne Rooney was involved again when he was brought down approximately twenty-five metres from goals but unfortunately on this occasion Stephen McGuirk’s free kick attempt went agonisingly close but the wrong side of the post. From the kick-out Mark Daly gathered the breaking ball, after Liam Connolly thumped the ball down, and made a terrific run through the Eire Og defence and was brought down approximately twenty-five metres from goals and Stephen McGuirk, showing great composure, duly converted the free to regain the lead.
Fine team work involving Liam Connolly and Keith Daly set up the onrushing Noel Carroll who completed an excellent move when he popped over a fine point to extend our lead by two points. As we all know a two point lead is a dangerous one in GAA games and it had everyone along the line living on their nerves. With the game now in injury time Eire Og through everything at us, including the kitchen sink, and lobbed a high ball into the goal-mouth but our defence stood firm and when the referee blew for a square ball, there was a big sigh of relief. Now there are some things in this world that just baffle me. I don’t understand universal science and how black holes work. I don’t understand how Sandra Bullock picked up an Oscar for Best Actress and I don’t think I’ll ever understand why we took a quick free to Damien Matthews in the closing seconds of the game. Two points up, seconds remaining, take it easy lads! As it turned out, Damien was closed down instantly by the Eire Og players and he became isolated and as a result he over carried the ball. The Eire Og free taker made no mistake and put the ball over the bar to close the deficit back to a single point. Thankfully, on the kick-out the referee blew the final whistle which was music to our ears.
The spirit and attitude of the players made this a victory. Suffering the two defeats against Donaghmoyne and Doohamlet the previous week was hard to take particularly after playing well. Every player showed heart, fight, passion and on this occasion the nerve that one needs to win a battle like this one. It was a whole-hearted effort as they left absolutely everything on the field and outscored Eire Og by 0-11 to 0-10 to secure the two valuable league points.

“Spirited Performance Not Enough as Rock Lose Close Encounter”
Team: Jamie Smith, Colin Reilly, Damien Matthews, Garry Calvert, Keith Daly, Johnny Reilly, Niall McKeown, Martin Carroll, Liam Connolly, Paul McKeown, Mark Daly, Coiln Quinn, Mark McGuirk, Dwayne Rooney and Conor McGeough.
Subs: Pauric Reilly for Conor McGeough
We travelled to the Monaghan county training grounds in Cloghan, on Sunday 18th April, in what was a home venue for the Doohamlet side. Unfortunately, we were missing a number of players with injuries namely Noel Carroll, Stephen McGuirk, Ciaran O’Hart, Mickey Conlon, Eoin Fitzpatrick and Barry Patterson.
Doohamlet opened the scoring after twenty-five seconds with a fisted point. We responded in the 3rd minute when Garry Calvert came forward to show the attackers the way, leveling the contest by sending over in style a point from twenty-five metres after receiving the ball from Paul McKeown. Doohamlet regained the lead almost instantly when a high ball lobbed into our goal-mouth was deflected over the bar by Jamie Smith.
In the 6th minute Mark Daly tapped over a free kick after Niall McKeown was stopped by a frontal challenge to draw the side’s level. The next run of play saw both teams kick wides before Colin Reilly fouled his opponent, in the 12th minute, and the Doohamlet free taker put the ball over the bar. A couple of minutes later Mark McGuirk was awarded a free kick and Mark Daly slotted the ball over the bar to draw the sides all square.
Mark Daly arguably kicked the point of the game in the 14th minute from a free kick on the sideline on the twenty-one metre line and with the outside of his boot curled the ball straight between the posts to put us one up. Doohamlet responded with a fine point from play in the 19th minute and three minutes later we were awarded a free kick on the 45m line which Mark Daly took quickly to Paul McKeown and he sent a measured pass into Colin Quinn who rounded his opponent lovely but unfortunately his shot at goals, from an acute angle, went wide. Doohamlet regained the lead in the 25th minute with a superb point from play and increased their lead moments later with another well taken point to leave the half time score Doohamlet 0-6 Rockcorry 0-4.
At the break team management made a switch moving Mark Daly into midfield with Liam Connolly going to the half forward line. Doohamlet started the half the better and kicked two wides within the first couple of minutes and in the 4th minute they had a goal opportunity but thankfully Jamie Smith prevented them extending their lead when he brilliantly saved their shot. A number of half chances came our way but unfortunately led to nothing. However, after seven fruitless minutes we managed to score when Dwayne Rooney slotted over a terrific long range point. Jamie Smith proved his alertness in the 16th minute and made another great save to deny Doohamlet a goal but unluckily the rebound went to a Doohamlet player and he fired the ball over the bar.
Paul McKeown was fouled in the 19th minute after making a solo run towards goals and Mark Daly sailed the free kick over the bar. Doohamlet kicked a further wide in the 20th minute and two minutes later they landed another shot in to the hands of our goalie Jamie Smith. At this stage Doohamlet were piling on the pressure and Martin Carroll fouled his opponent on the twenty-five metre line and their free taker tapped over a straightforward free to open up a two point gap. We managed to reduce the deficit when Liam Connolly collected a pass from Pauric Reilly who found Dwayne Rooney and after turning in style he was brought down and Mark Daly tapped over the free to leave just a single point between the sides going into the last five minutes. As we went in search of the equaliser we were unable to get the ball into a scoring opportunity or draw a free kick. However, poor defending and giving possession away down the other end resulted in us giving away a free kick that Doohamlet duly converted to leave the final score Doohamlet 0-9 Rockcorry 0-7.
On reflection, this was a close and competitive game with the sides being level no less than four times throughout the match. It will be no consolation to the team that despite an admirable performance where we showed great team spirit and character we still lost the game. If we are to win close encounters then we need to start eliminating unforced errors and be able to put scores on the board!
