Intermediate Championship Draw

We have been drawn against Currin in the preliminary round of the Intermediate Championship with the winners meeting either Doohamlet or Aghabog in the next round.

Training

The lads had their first training session last week and I was very impressed with the turnout of players. It was good to see a blend of youthful energy along with some off our more experienced players in attendance.  David our trainer took us through our paces with a gentle session just to break us in! With the first round of the Intermediate league provisionally fixed for the last weekend in March and with the Reserve football competitions starting at the beginning of March it will be important to keep the numbers high at training. Keep up the good work lads.

Foundation Level Coaching Course

The club provides a very important service for the young people of our community that enables them to participate in team events while ensuring a safe and friendly environment. To continue providing this service we are looking for new people that will help out at juvenile coaching sessions. Our door is always open and I encourage all parents, any ex players or current players that are not involved in coaching juveniles to seriously consider doing so. The club is organising a foundation level coaching course which will also include a Code of Ethics (Child Protection). I would encourage all parents, players etc to take advantage of this course. Please contact Martina McKeown our Youth Officer for further information.

Coaching Courses / Workshops

Anybody interested in attending any of the following coaching courses/workshops please contact our Youth Officer Martina McKeown. Powerbag Conditioning with the Ball in Cloghan on Monday 8th February at 7.30-9.3opm. Defensive Play U14-Senior in Cloghan on Monday 8th March at 7.30-9.30pm.

Social Night

Friday 26th February has been selected for our annual social and presentation night to be held in St. Mary’s Hall. Tickets will be on sale shortly and it is hoped that there will be a large turnout to support this event.

Plans for our juvenile presentation night are progressing and I hope to have full details for you in next week’s notes.

Team Trainer

David McGregor has been appointed as our team trainer / selector for the year ahead. David is off course an ex-player with the club and was our goalkeeper back in 1982 when we captured the junior double. He has a lifelong involvement with GAA and is also involved with Monaghan Rugby. His reputation ensures that his “no-nonsense” style will be challenging for our players but hopefully this, tough no rubbish talk approach, will drive our players to greater heights this year. He met the players last Sunday afternoon where he strongly emphasized that they will have to make sacrifices and be prepared to work hard for the year ahead. David, on behalf of the club I would like to welcome you back and wish you and the team every success for the year ahead.

 HELP

The success of the club is built on the willingness of people to become involved. We are on the lookout for juvenile managers & coaches to help out with our underage teams. The club simply cannot operate without plenty of help and we are appealing to people especially parents to volunteer their services to help out with our juvenile teams. You do not have to be an expert and you will be instructed by an experienced coach, but please come forward and volunteer. You may be able to spare one hour on a Saturday morning or one evening per week to supervise at training sessions, or maybe at a game. Whatever you can do please do come forward and offer your help as we need as many people as possible. You never know you may enjoy it and your children will certainly benefit from it.

Club Notes 7th January 2010

Happy New Year

Firstly, I would like to wish all our members and supporters a happy, healthy and a successful 2010.

Farney Barney Boxing

“Wow what a night’s entertainment”. It’s very hard to express in words what occurred at the Farney Barney Boxing night. Words such as brilliant, outstanding, magnificent only come close to describe the evening. The commitment and intensity shown by all boxers was truly inspiring and more importantly they showed a healthy respect for each other and I admire every single one of them for dishing up a wonderful nights entertainment and craic to raise funds for the county team. Hands up to our very own Anthony “Tayto” Tate for having the nerve and guts to get in the ring as it certainty was not for the faint hearted. Unfortunately, on the night he was narrowly defeated by a single point but he can hold his head up high for a truly amazing performance. Many thanks to Raymond Treanor of the Maple Bar for sponsoring Anthony on the night. By the way, can someone check up on Charlie as he appeared to get weak at the knees during the intervals! I wonder why?

Pool Competition

Many thanks to everyone who entered the pool competition held on St. Stephen’s Day in the Maple Bar. Martin Carroll was the eventual winner by defeating Cormac McFadden in the final. The biggest shock of the afternoon was the defeat of hot favourite Raymond Treanor in the first round by Darragh “The Giant Killer” Dempsey. Afterwards Raymond maintained that “he let the little guy win”. We believe you Raymond but thousands wouldn’t!!!

Player of the Year Awards

Congratulations to Garry Calvert and Cathal Sheridan who were named as senior player of the year and reserve player of the year respectively. The presentation of the awards will take place at our annual social night, details of which are to be arranged.
